And the FOA2010 Jets chapter is now out-of-date BEFORE the book is even published. The Jets have re-signed left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson to a six-year contract extension that will be worth $60 million, including $34.8 million in guaranteed money.
As Adam Schefter notes, Ferguson is now locked up for the next eight seasons at a cost of $73.6 million. Wow.

Lane Johnson and D.J. Fluker were selected high in the draft, but both have troubling flaws in pass protection according to Word of Muth.

Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
One of the all-time great NFL names
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Definitely a great name, but an all-time great? Hmmm... That's a bold statement. I think that needs further analysis - right now, he doesn't crack my top-five, but that doesn't necessarily preclude him from all-time greatness.
My all-time favorites:
1. Guy Whimper
2. Chris Fuamatu-Ma'fala
3. Mack Strong
4. Craphonso Thorpe
5. Tiaina Baul (Junior) Seau
6. Bronislau (Bronco) Nagurski
7. Dick Butkus
8. Garo Yepremian
9. D'Brickashaw Ferguson
10. Chuck Bednarik
You'll notice my list is biased heavily towards very recent players (and Samoans); my knowledge is admittedly limited, so I need the help of the FO brain trust to establish a list of the true all-time greats. Jim Otto and Otto Graham get honorable mentions for symmetry. I had much internal debate over whether Orenthal James Simpson belonged on the list. Visanthe Shiancoe is a controversial omission; maybe he makes it on next year's ballot. I originally had Mike Ditka at #10, but added Bednarik at the last minute. Raiderjoe will no doubt protest the exclusion of Fred Biletnikoff and Darryl Lamonica.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
How could you pick Bednarik over Fair Hooker?
And unless you have a minimum number of games played requirement, this guy has to be on your list:

Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
I'm a fan of Cory Lekkerkerker.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala.
I take pride in being able to pronounce names like that. Manumaleuna. No problem.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
You can sing that guy's name to the tune of "Hollaback Girl" with terrifying ease.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
In helpful pronunciation hints, you can also remember Iranian President Ahmadinejad by singing the Beatles "All Together Now". This has nothing to do with football. It's just weird.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
You're missing Johnny "Blood" McNally, a hall-o'-famer.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
I protest! Tshimanga Biakabatuka must be on any list like this!
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Agreed
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Seriously. Biakabutuka is probably my favorite name of all time to say, inside football or out.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
I suggest saying it using Beavis' voice followed by Beavis' laugh. It's impossible not to crack up laughing. At least if you're me. Which you're not. But still.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Anyone else notice the irony of a guy named "Spielman" saying his favorite name is "Biakabutuka?"
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
I don't know about that... some hockey names are pretty good to say. "Mikko Makela" and "Ilkka Sinisalo" come to mind. As well as "Hakan Loob". Add in the fact that I'm missing the umlauts and ring, and they get even better.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
There has never been a better hockey name than Butch Goring. I don't follow the sport to know if he was any good.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Nah, the best hockey name of all time has to be Miroslav Satan. He's either a hockey player or a Bond villain.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
And, of course, it's a great disappointment that he never played for the Devils.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
reat Raiders names- Fred Biletnikoff, Daryle Lamonica, Lester Hayes, Cliff Branch, Mark van Eeghen, Jim Otto, Otis Sistrunk and some others

Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Joe, you stole my thunder. The first name I thought of was Junior Tautalatasi. I used to love the fact that Buddy Ryan called him Junior Smith. As I was typing this, I thought of Guido Merkins, and sure enough, you got that one too.
He's not going to make an all time list, but an honorable mention should go out to Mar Tay Jenkins.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Bob Margarita! Awesome. Margarita is a common girl's name in Spanish.
I also like names like Oronde Gadsden, Yancey Thigpen and Plaxico Burress.
I'm still waiting for a perfect name like Crystal Balls to come along. Too bad Crystal is a girl's name, but you never know.
Real life story: there was once a construction company (or something) in Mexico called "Caro & Malo" ...which means bad and expensive.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
It would not shock me in the least if there was a Cristal currently playing somewhere between pee-wee and college.

And one day I think there'll be a place in the wacky-name hall-of-fame for Chad Ochocinco.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Chad Ochocinco is disqualified for performance-enhancing name changes.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
I've always had a soft spot for Richie Incognito. The name that is, I loathe the player. But there's something perfect about how poorly it describes him--probably the least incognito lineman out there, what with the constant personal fouls and whatnot.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Oh, that's a good one - I can't believe I forgot about him! (insert your own joke here)
Thanks, everyone, for the assistance. As expected, I didn't even know what I didn't know. You know?
One more addition - Pino Tinoisamoa.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
I've always loved the name Vai Sikahema.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
If you've ever heard the Chicago media, it's especially good -- 90% of them seem to think his first name is "Pisotino"
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
The Dolphins had a linebacker in the 90s called Chuck Klingbiel which I always thought was quite good.
Also a quick look on wikipedia gives us Jacobus Franciscus Wa-Tho-Huk, or Jim Thorpe.

Quentin Jammer is the Platonic ideal of a cornerback name.

Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Syndric Steptoe, LaRod Stephens-Howling, and A.J. Hawk were popular last time around.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
8 seasons?!?! Plaxico Burress was only locked up for 2.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Thanks for the laugh.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Assuming there is a cap in 2011 and forward, or the Jets have to work with some sort of budget, this really is a headscratcher of a move. I guess we'll have to wait for MMQB's return to get the real impact of this deal, but the Jets gave a record contract to no better than their 4th best player (Revis, Mangold and Harris), and no better than 5th most valuable to keep (the Sanchise), I have to wonder if one or more of the big 3 will be gone.
This also makes the release of Faneca much harder to explain.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Why would this make Faneca's release harder to explain? Faneca is 7 years older than Brick and plays a lesser position. I think this is a win-win for both sides; locking up a very good LT for his prime, and his contract, while hefty, will certainly be cheaper than the new deals that Joe Thomas, Jake Long and Ryan Clady will get
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
I don't think it's that head-scratchy if it's front loaded. There will probably be some kind of cap in the future, but there's no cap this year.
I also think (and this is just me theorizing) that if the owners intend to drop the cap by some significant amount, that there will have to be some sort of grandfather clause for deals that were done prior to the change. I recall the NBA doing something like that back when they implemented a cap. The whole "we can't do any deals until we know what the cap situation is going to be like in the future" line that teams are spinning is a BS negotiating tactic. There's going to be some kind of provision, or every team in the league would be over the cap. Or they'll just scrap the cap altogether, in which case this discussion becomes moot.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
I'm not so sure that old deals will be grandfathered in. Only a couple teams have made big deals this season, and they've tended to be front loaded to avoid cap issues (like Willis' contract). Why would the majority of owners enact a bylaw about grandfather deals when only a couple would benefit?
So, I think Polian is being genuine when he says that he won't make a deal with an uncertain cap situation. In order to make such a deal, the team takes on substantial risk (large upfront bonus, perhaps an additional bonus in a couple years) in terms of guaranteed money to pay players at the level they feel they ought to be compensated. This is due to a combination of the 30% rule and the cap situation. I could see a risk-averse general manager, with high confidence in his scouting department, making the decision that he'd just rather not extend anyone on the margin till this is all settled.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
"Why would the majority of owners enact a bylaw about grandfather deals when only a couple would benefit?"
It's not just deals from this year that would be problematic though. Plenty of guys signed big money deals last year, and the year before that, and the year before that, based on the cap structure of that time and the premise that the cap would keep going up. IMO, there's not a team in the league that wouldn't suddenly find itself with at least one unwieldy contract on its hands if the cap were to drop significantly. And that's before we factor in all the 1st-round picks that are still unsigned (which I believe is all of them).
Not sure why you mentioned Polian specifically, but he just gave a pretty nice contract to Antoine Bethea, so he's obviously not THAT set against doing a deal in the current environment. And the Colts are still making noise about breaking the bank (again) for Peyton Manning.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Can't agree with much of that. Less valuable than Revis? Absolutely. Less valuable than Sanchez? Remains to be seen; Sanchez probably has to be at least a top ten quarterback for that to be true, and it's far from clear that he will be. Less valuable than Harris or Mangold? Not buying it for a second. No inside linebacker in football earns as much as $9m a season. Jahri Evans, the best interior offensive lineman in the league, just signed a deal which averages $8.1m a season. With a few exceptions, of which the Jets are not one, NFL front offices are not incompetent. Left tackles get paid more for a reason. It is just a more important position.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
"I guess we'll have to wait for MMQB's return to get the real impact of this deal, "
Huh? I'm hoping my sarcasm detector is broken. Otherwise... WTF???
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
He has great sources and can find out exactly how deals are structured.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
You may get the same thing from an Under the Cap post right here on FO.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
I'm not sure I'd trust King to understand what his sources were telling him about contract well enough to communicate it accurately and in detail for his readers. Far better to rely on Florio for that sort of thing, absent an Under the Cap on the subject.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Aaron, I want my money back for that free Jets chapter I downloaded. It was excellent, of course, but based on at least one flimsy assumption. If Revis is extended soon, I'll demand double my money back.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Ask for a pony while you are at it (never pass up the opportunity to ask for a pony, you never know when it will come up again!).
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Do you have idea how much work owning a pony is? Feeding it, exercising it, cleaning up after it. And where do you take a pony for exercise in a city?
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
You are ignoring the potentially life changing and lucrative opportunities pony ownership can create for you.
And where do you take a pony for exercise in a city?
A pony gym? Or just use it to commute.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
They allow livestock in my town--we already have four chickens, and I can see the Seattle skyline 3 mi away from my home office window right now, so it's kind of a city. A pony would be very popular with my kids and an interesting commute. Might be faster to walk, though. And where do I park him downtown Seattle? The bike racks (free)? The parking stalls ($25 a day)? Then I have to make sure he has feed and water and a diaper while I am at work. What if somebody steals him?!?!
I could rent him out for rides during the day, hiring a local youth to lead tourists through downtown for cash, split the money, and then head home at five.
Ooh, wait, maybe my wife and I can take the pony downtown; she drops me off then takes the pony home. The nanny can then take the kids to school on the pony. Wait-part-two: The nanny might require a pony made of surplus battleship steel. Must re-think that.
I'll just keep him with the chickens and never have to pay for fertilizer again! Thanks for the great ideas!
It's settled: Aaron, keep my money, I want a pony/oompa-lumpa, now, daddy.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
That's the spririt! Pony ahoy!
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
The thing rides you to work of course. There you put it on a lawn and it eats. Won't get a ticket for double parking, or parking outside of a zone.
No speeding tickets also. And I bet it will do great with the ladies.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Obafemi Ayanbadejo has got to be on a list somewhere
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
I believe he's on the list of all players named Ayanbadejo who have played in the NFL. Heck, he might even be at the top!
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Nope, he's at the bottom
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/player_search.cgi?search=Ayanbadej...
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
To be fair, Brendon is a middle name. If we're going by first names across the board, Obafemi would be at the top.
Re: Jets Lock Up D'Brickashaw Ferguson
Mercury Morris is pretty good (though not his birth name)
Hokie Gajan (same thing)
Vagas Ferguson
(I seem to have an RB thing going here)
Franco Harris is a pretty cool short, percussive combination of his mixed ethnic roots.
Dick Butkus--that's the ball peen hammer of names. You don't f--- with somebody named Dick Butkus.
Always liked Chuck Long. If not a QB, he'd have had to be a javelin thrower.

Thanks, RJ, for reminding my of my late Polish grandmother and her frequent use of "dupa." Never really knew if it was something she made up or real. Damn, she was one funny broad.
Also, your Pat Angerer note above is right-on. I say this not as a Colts fan, but a fan of words: If he isn't suspended for 'roids sometime, he's not living up to his name.
Re: dupa
How the hell did I forget Ryan Wetnight?
Thinking of old Bears, Tom Waddle wasn't a bad name for a slow WR either.
