MMQB Likes the Browns

Hey, it's hard not to after the way they played yesterday. I certainly think crushing the Patriots is more impressive than, say, slipping past Kansas City primarily because one rookie wideout is playing out of his gourd.

I doubt the Raiders will win the AFC, wet or dry. But good luck, rj.

"I don't think he's the type quarterback at this stage that Shanahan wants to move forward with. Shanahan wants someone that is a little more accurate passer as well as not carrying as many injuries from over the years, the extra baggage. You get beaten up over a period of time and McNabb today certainly doesn't move around as well as he used to and his accuracy hasn't improved as a passer.''
-- Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath, on Donovan McNabb and coach Mike Shanahan's controversial week-old benching of the player thought to be his franchise quarterback.

That might all make sense, but in what universe is Rex Grossman an accurate passer or durable?

The one where Derek Anderson, Alex Smith and JaMarcus Russell are legitimate quarterbacks.

Oh, you're talking about the UFL...

Alex Smith would tear up the UFL. The defenses are slower so throw power isn't as important.

I don't think it's really about Rex Grossman (although I have seen reports that OC Kyle Shanahan likes Rex). I think it's more about the fact that they aren't going anywhere with McNabb. It seems pretty obvious that Shanahan will be looking for a new QB next season. I am sure that Shanahan has his eye on a reunion with Jay Cutler. If the Bears fold down the stretch, leading to a regime change at Halas Hall, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see the Bears trade Cutler to the Redskins, leaving the Bears yet again looking for a QB to build around (Ryan Mallett?).

You can't build a team around Chicago Quarterback.

No way. The first question in any interview with a prospect coach would be "what is your plan to get Jay Culter to play at a high level?"

I think you are assuming that the person asking the question is Jerry Angelo or Ted Phillips. But when I say "regime change," I mean one in which Angelo and Lovie Smith are gone, and possibly Phillips, too. (Although I can certainly see a scenario in which Phillips survives, since his area of responsibility does not directly concern player personnel moves.)

If they hire a GM or someone with player personnel responsbility in a role like Bill Parcells has had recently, or like Mike Holmgren has in Cleveland, and if he or the new coach really doesn't think he can win with Cutler, I could definitely see Cutler being traded. For example, if they could get Bill Cowher as coach (doubtful, but play along for purpose of this analysis), do you really think the deal-breaker would be whether or not he would keep Cutler? I don't.

Obviously, we'll have to see how the season plays out. But if the team implodes because of a Cutler turnover-fest like we saw in the Redskins game or many of the games last year, and if you could get some good draft picks from the Redskins for Cutler, it's entirely possible that this could happen.

"Where is Santonio Holmes, Brian Schottenheimer? Call his number more often."

According to the official gamebook, Holmes was targeted 9 times against the Lions, more than any other Jets receiver.

And? He's their best receiver, get him more balls.

"
Last four games: 144 points. That's 36 points a game, with three of the games (Houston, Dallas and Seattle) played on the road."

I wonder if the fact that they played Houston, Dallas, Seattle and Detroit has anything to do with it? Seattle leads the pack by with a 2.7% DVOA, which will go up this week.

Not taking away from the Giants who are playing very well, but lighting up Houston, Dallas and Seattle is not exactly hard (Detroit has the most "respectable" pass D DVOA by far, with 2%).

In other news, every team that won yesterday is the best team in the NFL and will keep winning forever! No such thing as flukes or small sample sizes in this universe! And every team that lost yesterday brought shame to King's heart.

"Who knows what the headlines would read in Minnesota this morning if Brett Favre hadn't pulled a Favre in the last five minutes of the fourth quarter and led two classic Favre touchdown drives (after throwing a you-gotta-be-kidding-me interception at the goal line and a fourth-down end-zone incompletion on his previous two series) to force overtime."

I thought pulling a Favre WAS throwing an interception.

Seriously.

Should have said "Brett Favre did his imitation of an NFL quarterback for two whole drives on Sunday."

I like how King was shocked (!) at HIS OWN MVP list.
