That great resource -- the NFL TV Distribution Maps -- are back for another season.
Question: Why does the very bottom of Southern California get Jacksonville-Denver instead of Oakland-Tennessee?

It's ... still 2007 all over again. But were the Patriots really that good this season?

Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
Because that's where San Diego is, so they are getting the AFC West game.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
Oakland plays in the NFC west, too.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
Man I am having a bad day, and I whiffed in my head on Oakland being in the West.
Anyhoo, looks like the AFC West preferable game is DEN/JAX, since KC gets it too. The Oakland market is just largeish.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
Then I'll set you up with an easy one: Since the Seahawks are now in the NFC (for almost a decade?) how come the Raiders are on TV in Seattle every possible opportunity?
There are literally times that, for example, an 8-1 Steelers team will play a 9-0 Colts team and instead, the local CBS affiliate will show the 1-7 Raiders taking on the 1-7 Browns. This is only a slight exaggeration, but division leaders going head to head are routinely stiffed for the Raiders trying to play their way out of a large paper bag, and all I can figure is because of a FORMER rivalry.
Kill me, please....
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
Literally?
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
You're looking at it wrong. I'd bet 1-7 vs. 1-7 is going to be an epic game a higher % of time than 9-0 vs. 8-1
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
That's because it's perceived that there are a lot of Raider fans here from those days. I don't think that's true, but they are vocal enough to make it seem so.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
Looks like the san diego area. Perhaps the idea is that Charger fans would care more about the denver game than the oakland game (since Denver and SD have fought more for the AFC West division title in recent seasons).
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
as a san diego fan and living semi close to the san diego area ill agree with you. I feel like denver can luck into taking the AFC west but that the raiders cant possibly get that lucky.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
The map might be a little off but it looks like St. Louis will not be getting the Arizona/St. Louis game. Ouch.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
If you look at the comments, the guy who runs the site said that FOX is expecting a blackout.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
As a Packers fan in St Louis, I'm happy. I don't have to go to a sports bar to watch GB @ Philly.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
My plan is to go down to the dome. Scary thing is, I think I have a very good chance of being there for Sam Bradfords first NFL win.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
Is that how it works? I thought that, if the local game is blacked out, no NFL coverage will be shown on that channel.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
According to Wikipedia, other games can be shown providing they comply with the other regulations, so in this case, if I understand correctly, Fox would still have shown a doubleheader and CBS would have shown only an early game in St. Louis.
That doesn't match what I seem to remember - I thought that back when the Colts didn't sell out, you'd get garbage on CBS rather than a game - but things may have changed since then.
Also, the St. Louis game will not be blacked out (from what later comments have said), so I guess this is all hypothetical for now ...
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
This week is a special case since CBS doesn't have any 4:00 (Eastern) games due to the U.S. Open final.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
They might have sold the tickets by now, but earlier in the week they hadn't sold out yet and the game was going to be blacked out in St. Louis.
St. Louis
Wow, the Rams are on in parts of Missouri and Illinois near St. Louis, but not in fact St. Louis itself.
I was also wondering why Florida got the Denver game, figured it had to be the Tebow factor... until I remembered that Jacksonville was also in the game.

Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
The SD CBS affiliate generally shows the Denver game when there's a choice of AFC West rivals, presumably because the Chargers/Broncos rivalry has been the most heated since 2005.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
FOX is assuming that the St. Louis game will be blacked out. Areas just outside the blackout zone will get the game.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
Does anyone know of similar maps for college football? ABC/ESPN is good about showing theirs before the 2nd game of the day, but I haven't found one online...

Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
And why does the Richmond, VA area get the Colts- game when its neighbors get the NE-Bengals game? I could care less, but it seems odd.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
Colts used to be in Baltimore. Still have fans there.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
See, and I thought it was so Ravens fans could launch flaming bags of dog poo at their TVs while making fun of Manning, Polian, the whole Irsay family, etc....
silly me.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
This doesn't seem right to me. Call me crazy but wouldn't Richmond be Redskins country? Basically the rest of Virginia is.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
Absolutely, but that doesn't affect AFC games, only NFC and interconference games.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
Also, Schaub is a UVA grad and has been drawing that audience for a while now, if I remember correctly.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
Meanwhile Sky, in their infinite wisdom, have decided that the must-see games are Panthers@Giants and 49ers@Seahawks. I know we're going to get constant Niners and Broncos coverage because of the Wembley game, but really?
Thank God for Gamepass.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
No SKY for me this year so I need to find alternatives and fast. Is Gamepass worth the money?

Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
James,
GamePass is worth much more than it costs. It really is good. Superb HD resolution, the archived games have all the adverts taken out so you can watch the Sunday and Monday night games the next day at a sensible time in 2 hrs rather than 3 and a half, and this year you can watch up to 4 games at the same time, which sounds good to me.
I was debating with a friend about how much I would have to pay before I was priced out and just listened to it on the radio like in the good old days (from 1987 till Internet came along that meant AFN radio broadcast from Frankfurt on medium wave with the most god-awful reception that you could only hear even faintly through the crackles if your radio was positioned at certain angle and in a certain location in the room and would inevitably disappear completely when a good game was reaching its climax (especially when the Packers were playing), and which was the same frequency as a Spanish opera station...) anyway, I digress. I reckon I would have to pay 3 times what it costs, at least before I decided not to pay it. But don't tell the NFL that please.
I also have the ESPN Player for college games (it's called ESPN3 this year, was ESPN360 last year), which ought to be good value at £90 for the season, and they appear to have a superb range of games this year, but it wasn't working last weekend and I don't believe it has yet been fixed, so you may want to wait until it is working before committing. You can buy a one week pass to check it out if you like, or a monthly pass.
And yes, my Internet provider got stroppy with me last year for using too much bandwidth during the American Football season...
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
Seconded. Gamepass is awesome, and even more so now that they've fixed the technical issues that would plague it in the early weeks of each season for its first few years. It's murdering my productivity, but yes, it's absolutely worth the money.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
49ers/Seahawks ahead of Packers/Eagles is a shocker. I can only imagine Sky are contractually obliged to show some 49ers games as part of the agreement with the NFL regarding the Wembley fixture.
The Panthers/Giants game is odd because Colts/Texans and Bengals/Pats look like much more attractive matchups. I guess they figure they'll probably be screening plenty of Colts and Pats anyway before the season is out.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
Awesome. Apparantly Washington DC falls in the Virgina (Carolina maybe? WTH?) market and not the Maryland/Baltimore market, so I get the wonderful Chiefs/Jacksonville, instead of NE/Cinci
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
Hi,
The website is blocked at my work. Can someone let me know if NYC gets NE / Cin?
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
Ed: NYC is getting NE/CIN, yes.

I usually prefer former coaches to former players as analysts, but if the Jim Mora listed as working with Dick Stockton and Charles Davis is Mora the Younger, that's another team which will have the volume turned down on them.
Re: NFL Distribution Maps For Week 1
I remember checking this every week last season, and always being pissed about the crap games in the san fran market... 9ers raiders every week, with no other games half the time. I literally watched every game at the old pro in Palo Alto. Mind you, I live in Oakland.
Then I got Directv and the ticket.
This just reiterates how excited I am. This Sunday will literally be a dream come true. Bengals, at home, 60 inch elite, HD.
