Further proof that just because something is traditional does not mean it is good: The Packers last week unveiled a third uniform, highlighted by a blue jersey that features blue numbers in a yellow circle. It's a recreation of the team's 1929 uniforms. So eighty years ago they decided this was a bad design, and now they are bringing it back for whatever reason. Aside from that detail, the uniforms aren't terrible, merely boring -- brown helmet, drab tan pants.

Minor weaknesses dot these teams. Except for Arizona, which needs to bring in more help to really run Bruce Arians' offense.

Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
I like them. What do I know?
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Agreed, I like.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Count me as another one who likes these throwbacks.
Was there a post complaining about the hideous throwbacks the Broncos wore last season? Or the Jets? Or the Eagles?
Now those are some ugly throwbacks.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Bronco fans and players complained about what the Broncos wore last year 50 years ago and have never stopped.
I don't think these Packers unis are particularly good or bad, just rather dull.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
They never use throwback helmets, do they?
I know you couldn't go back to leather helmets.... but you could paint a leather pattern on a modern helmet...
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Don't think I've seen a throwback Packers helmet, but plenty of other teams use them.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
The Chiefs throwback helmets were particularly cool--a red map of Texas (how appropriate) with a small star wherever they were domiciled at the time. They may have even worn them vs the Cowboys....
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
The throwback helmet I've seen with this uniform is brown to look like leather.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Why do teams keep trotting out these ugly designs. They must know they are ugly, but they do it anyways. Is it just the any publicity is good publicity angle?
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
The only real ugly thing is the back, where the players' names are full size and the numbers are full size. That's a nod to modern rules. Keep in mind that this uniform will be worn once this season and it will be at Lambeau Field, where the fans will love it. This jersey commemorates the team's first title season in 1929. Hey, we've got a little history up here that means something.
PUT HELMET HERE ----->
Looks like a target on the front and yellow too; quickest colour to identify.
Re: PUT HELMET HERE ----->
"Why do you think I wear a target on my chest? I can't armor my head."
Wow, who knew The Dark Knight Returns had something to say about the concussion issue?
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Before you know it they're gonna dig up Brett Favre's body and let him play QB.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Why do teams keep trotting out these ugly designs?
Money.
Ugly designs = new designs
new designs = new jersey sales
new jersey sales = more dollars for the owners.
I don't care what the new uniforms are like, I'll still root for Aaron Rogers to light it up even in the uglies. $hit, I'd even root for Aaron Rogers if he was wearing a Redskins uniform but I'd be very conflicted.
The Green Bay Packers are the team of the next decade, and they will win at least TWO super bowls.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
C, you're a Giants fan right? Just how conflicted would you be, and could you root for Rogers in an Eagles or Cowboys jersey?
And they're not very attractive jerseys.
strong>Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Out of curiosity, what is the backstory on the Phil Simms tag?
If it helps, I wouldn't get you confused with any other James from London if you forgot to put it on there one day. ;-)
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
No back story, the man's commentary is ...well, just cretinous. And it's always nice to be remembered :-)
Phil Simms is a Cretin.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Jeez, and here I always thought he was from Crete... like the Minotaur.
I guess it makes more sense now.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
thats weird because i always thought he was one of those little pieces of baked bread you put on salads. live and learn.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Yeah it's weird. I always thought that he was an ex-cretian.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
I would be very conflicted to root for Aaron Rodgers in a Redskins uniform.
Same with Aaron Rodgers wearing Eagles Puke green
Or wearing Jerry's Star on his helmet.
My love for Bill Parcells as a person and as a football GOD was greater than my hatred for the Dallas Cowboys so I actually cheered for Parcells to do well in Dallas so that should show you where my priorities are.
I root for the Giants Laundry and the city of New York, but I can't root against greatness like Bill Parcells. I just couldn't do it. It's like when Spike Lee would cheer for the NY Knicks to beat the Chicago Bulls, but he still wanted to see Michael Jordan do well because he admired him so much.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
I realize the money aspect of it, but couldn't they just put a little effort into making them look good? The Chargers have some very nice looking powder blues, the Texan's Battle Red jerseys are the prettiest things, but it doesn't look like a slap in the face.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
What's really odd is how, being that the really old throwbacks were worn during the days of black & white TV, they look normal on old NFL Films videos, it never even enters my mind what the colors would've been back then. And these really old throwbacks, have really hideous color schemes, that yellow/sky blue Eagles one, the Red Grange era Bears one, the pumpkinhead Packers throwback from a few years back.
I'm all for celebrating the teams history, but I have a hard time believing the major motivator behind the throwbacks and the constant changing/tweaking of their uniforms isn't jersey sales.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
The Green Bay Packers are the team of the next decade, and they will win at least TWO super bowls.
Woh there. I'd settle for forcing two incomplete passes in a playoff game.
/hyperbole
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
I don't see any problem with them at all. They seem nice.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
circle on fornt look like cheese whell
dumb ugly stupid uniofrms. crap bornw helemt, blue hersey, light brown pants, blakc cleats dumb all over
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
I have to agree, Mr.Joe, maybe because we're both drunk. The jersey's themselve actually look pretty cool. But the stupid brown helmets, pants and jerry-rigged throwback-modern look is what really makes it a fucking dumb looking jersey.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
I too like these throwbacks. I'll use the Pack in Madden next year if I can use these.
((Ironic Captcha: New Dreaded))
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
They look like something out of a crappy Sci-Fi film to me
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Now that you say it, yes, they do . . . I wonder why.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
I think they're okay, in a sort of "so ugly they're kind of cool" way. Like old Citroens or Peugeots. They have that "Joe Varsity, Class of 1923" vibe about them. I think Jimmy Stewart wore one of these after he fell into the pool in It's a Wonderful Life.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
You know what's boring? Hating on throw back uniforms year after year.
This Packers throwback is a hell of a lot better than the (mostly) monochromatic or mismatched crap that a lot of teams wear these days.
Green Bay is not Green...
I find it refreshing that they not need to make green the primary color simply because they play in green bay.
I mean is the bay itself even green? Was it perhaps named after someone named green?
.... checking wikipedia I see that the bay was originally named (in french) Baie des Puants . Which means "Bay of the Stinkers, a name it takes from the stench of algae blooms in stagnant water. So the water may have indeed been green.
I don't suppose "Stinker Bay" would have been a viable name to attract settlement in the area, enough to where we'd one day have a team named the "Stinker Bay Packers"...
Re: Green Bay is not Green...
Yes, the bay can turn quite green. Especially the lower (south) end of the bay. It can also stink terribly. When it warms the algae bloom, the oxygen in the water goes down, and lots of fish die. They then float to shore and rot - and stink. It doesn't happen very often; a couple times/year at most. But you don't want to be around then.
I really love this uniform. But then I remember going to the Packers Hall of Fame as a kid and have fond memories of a similar uniform. So I'm biased.
Re: Green Bay is not Green...
Well, it seems that Foul End, in Warwickshire, is a desirable enough locale for a 4 bedroom house to be listed at £695,000 ($1,060,000). The again, judging by that photo I'm going to go out on a limb and say the population may not be large enough to support an NFL team . . .
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
If you look at photos from the 1929-1930 seasons, you see that the circle containing the number on the original uniform is about 4-5 inches in diameter. Much more subtle than the 8-10 inch circle on this uniform.
I wonder if the NFL uniform code has a size rule for minimum dimension of the numbers.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
It does, and that is indeed the reason for the enlargement of the circles.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Here's a link to a photo of that 1929 jersey. Doesn't look much like the current one.

Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
I like the uniforms. I would buy a jersey if it were available, except I live in Minnesota and I don't want my children to grow up without a father.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Some players modeled them at Fan Fest this year, and when you see the full uniform, it's horrible.
Perhaps not surprisingly, all pictures of this seem to have been removed from the internet.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Looks like a bad t-shirt from A&F.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Not ugly at all. Replace the gold circle with my face. THAT would be ugly.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
I am eternally grateful that my team's jerseys are, essentially, throwback jerseys. The uniform Johnny Unitas wore is basically the same as the one Peyton Manning wears.
That being said, I'm EVER VIGILANT to prevent an alternate black jersey.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
What difference does it make replicating the colors--all the games were in black and white in those days
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Not to the people who were at the games. Presumably they saw the games in color.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Vince - your mother is ugly. Love the new throwbacks.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
I confess that I like them, myself, but what will make or break the jersey is the helmet that goes along with it. I think the Jets throwback jerseys (i.e. the Titans)look great on their own, but the helmet and pants don't do them any favors.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Nick Collins wearing it: http://i.packers.com/pg/2010-03-12b/photo4.jpg
The rest of the pics: http://www.packers.com/multimedia/photo_galleries/2010_non-game/2010-03-...
I like 'em.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
The pants should've been the same color as the helmet, however.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
I don't think they're that bad looking, either. I like
the antique feel to the jersey.
Re: Packers Unveil Very Ugly Throwbacks
Way to go.
Those are jerseys from back when America still had a high functional literacy rate - a time when you could have a city with the word "green" in its name, and pick blue, gold and brown for that team's colors without worrying about how much it would confuse the plebs...
