Phillip Merling Out for Year

Torn Achilles: It's the new hotness! Remember those similarity scores for Phillip Merling in the Miami chapter of FOA 2010? Well, you can ignore those for now, as Merling will be gone for the entire year with a torn Achilles. This probably hands a starting job to first-round rookie Jared Odrick out of Penn State, but between Merling's injury and Jason Ferguson's retirement, the Miami defensive line has taken a serious depth hit in the last week.

Suddenly the Jets DLine looks plenty good.

It appears that he has been replaced by Marques Douglas.

As a Jets fan, I'm pretty annoyed.

Merling had also been charged with felony battery for allegedly hitting his pregnant girlfriend, so the Phins would've likely been without him for a while anyway...

There was even talk of him being released, and not just because of his personal problems, though that was probably an exaggeration. Still, he hasn't done anything so far so this, like Aaron says, mostly affects the team's depth.

As far as Ferg, he was only playing half the year, in any case, so the Dolphins were ready with Starks and Soliai to go without him.

Bad but not terrible news for Miami.
