Steelers Sign Flozell Adams

My guess is Adams starts on the left side, Max Starks moves back to the right side, and Jonathan Scott, for the love of all that is good and holy, is hopefully nowhere to be found.

We'll see. There have been plenty of cases going back to the Noll years where the Steelers have brought in a veteran lineman who seems like he'll be a starter, only to end up starting an obscure rookie and often cutting the vet. I'm not saying that's what's going to happen here, just that it's always possible.

What?!
Yeah we needed bodies on the line. Colon injured and now a guy that can not bend his knees.
Ok. I'm suspicious, but ok.
As a Steelers fan I'm ok whatever veteran signing they do on the oline.

No way. Adams will start on the right where his lack of quickness will be less of a detraction.

Max Starks is a perfectly fine LT. The problems with their line in the past few years has been at the guard and center spots.

He's NOT going to displace Starks on the left side.

How many blatant, dangerous trips and leg-whips will this guy be allowed this year before the league decides to crack down on him to protect the other players.

If he sighed in someplace like Buffalo or Cleveland, I'm sure the league would send him a message after the first, but since it's Pittsburgh, I'm guessing "all of them".

One year where his rapidly declining legs entice him to act in a way that he's never acted before, and now everyone thinks he's the worst person ever.

Flozell's an utter liability as a pass blocker, but can still be a useful player. I wrote a scouting report on him at Mocking the Draft. Enjoy.

Pass-Blocking: Adams' age is the prohibitive aspect here. In his prime Flozell's long arms and athleticism allowed him to capably contend with primo pass-rushers. He's a colossal man who's retained his strength over the years, but now has trouble keeping up with capable speed-rushers. He has some trouble backpedaling, and has slowly but perceptibly begun to cut corners to do his job capably. That's easy to note by looking at his frightening penalty totals. Adams handles bullrushers as well as anyone, and if the defensive player doesn't get past him in the first half-second, he'll likely be completely stymied for the extent of the play.

Run-Blocking: Adams remains a phenomenal run-blocker. It's evidenced by the Cowboys' fantastic success in running around the left end; Adams and Co. have paved the way for an explosive running game that regularly picks up long first downs. He regularly dominates defensive players and shows surprising ability to get to the second level. However, Adams' initial push is not great. He struggles in immediately manipulating the opposition, and thus is not great in short-yardage situations.

Overall: Adams is no longer a capable starting left tackle. That's not to say, though, that he can't be a good offensive lineman anymore. He'd probably be best-served following the Leonard Davis route and switching to guard, where his mauling ways and lack of mobility would be better utilized. I feel confident that he could be an above-average starting guard in almost any scheme, and should come fairly cheaply. He'll still accrue more than his share of false-start penalties, largely due to being deaf in one ear. But keep in mind that Cory Freaking Procter started at guard for a full year in this league, and It's clear that Adams will find a steady job somewhere in this league.
