Aaron Wilson reports on Twitter that the agent for Ravens quarterback Troy Smith has requested a trade away from Baltimore.
This seems curious. Is there any team that Smith would step in as the expected starter for? It's hard to even imagine a team that would give him an equal shot at a starting gig besides, perhaps, Buffalo. And what could the Ravens expect to get in return for Smith in a trade?

From Maurice Clarett to Samkon Gado, Mike Tanier explores the fringes of football employment. Plus, memories of a legend who started at the bottom of the depth chart.

Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
Tough to blame him, Flacco has the starting spot pretty well sewn up in Balt. I could see him being the Seneca Wallace of Holmgren's Browns. I hope he at least gets a chance somewhere.
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
Seriously, some team should just start collecting cheap, mobile, option-type quarterbacks and implement an appropriately wacky offense. If Tennessee could run out Young, Tebow, Smith and Johnson in the backfield, with the possibility of motioning, say, Smith to WR, or Tebow to TE, or Johnson to the slot, there would be room for some crazy trickeration. It's not like they have the receivers for a conventional passing game anyway.
Never going to happen, but I'd love to see some wackier offenses in the NFL.
Realistically, I guess he might think he's a better option than anything currently on the roster in Buffalo, Cleveland, Seattle, Oakland, San Francisco, maybe Washington if Campbell goes . . .
He'd probably be a decent fit for the Mountain variant of the WCO, actually - I'd certainly rather have him backing up Schaub than the Sex Cannon.
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
I would actually love to see him get a chance with the 49ers, I think he's been underrated for a while.
As far as wackier offenses go, that would be awesome. The problem is the fear of backlash on the head coaches. If they go out the first week and lose with the new offense, which is likely, fans would be calling for their head. There's too much risk for most head coaches. What the NFL needs is a Mike Leach, someone crazy enough to do it and egotistical enough not to care.
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
I haven't watched much of him, but I was very impressed with him in the preseason game against Miami. He certainly looked like a starter-caliber QB.
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
Mike "I don't care about turnovers or timeouts" Martz
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
Heck, one of the complaints about mobile QBs in the NFL is they'll get injured too much... No problem, just have six on your roster!
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
And no depth at 3 other positions.
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
Nah one is the 3rd string RB, one is 5th string WR, and the other is the backup QB (with a real QB in the emergency slot).
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
If there was a "You must be at least this important to demand a trade" line, isn't Troy Smith under it?
I mean kudos for trying, but shouldn't he just be happy he's employed?
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
And how do we know that Troy Smith isn't a good QB stuck behind a better one? He's only thrown 89 passes in his career, 76 of them in his rookie year before Flacco turned up.
He knows he can't beat out Flacco, so he wants a legit shot somewhere else. Makes sense to me.
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
He couldn't beat out Kyle Boller.
That doesn't necessarily mean he's not good, but it's pretty solid circumstantial evidence.
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
This was one of my two thoughts. My other thought was, "It's Troy Smith, who cares"?
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
He didn't "demand" a trade, he requested one. Big difference. If he'd demanded one (meaning he indicated that he'd hold out) I'd agree with you, but there's nothing wrong with his agent asking the team to look into trade possibilities, given that Flacco is entrenched as starter.
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
If Miami thinks that Pat White Experiment is a failure, he could work there. At best, he'd probably have to time share w/ Henne, but that's more than he has now.
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
That would be awesome. An Ohio State and a Michigan QB splitting time...

Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
Backup in Jax or Tampa.
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
As the roster is now, he would be the Browns starter.
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
Can't blame him. Flacco isn't going anywhere, and Smith is young, still has potential, and could still be a good QB. Just a shame he really never got a chance to show what he could do.
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
I'm going to guess that he hasn't left coaches' jaws on the ground in practice.
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
There's several teams he could get a chance to start for if they liked him, Buffalo, St Louis, Cleveland, if they've given up on Russel, Oakland. Sadly, there's a *lot* of poor QBing these days.
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
Maybe he just doesn't want to be in Buffalo anymore. No offense, Bills fans.
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
The Ravens actually play in Baltimore. ;)
Re: Troy Smith Requests Trade
Perhaps I'm wrong, but is Smith really all that mobile? I always got the impression he wasn't especially fast.

Well, the Toronto Argonauts come to mind.
All kidding aside, would love to see him on a CFL field.
