Mike Tanier Talks to 18to88.com

Nate Dunleavy had some technical difficulties when we did this podcast; he sounds a little like Max Headroom at times. Despite the blips, this is a great chance to hear Nate and I talk about The Philly Fan's Code in places where it dovetails with the interests of Indianapolis sports fans: quarterbacks like Donovan McNabb, Reds players (Indy is the home of the Reds AAA team) Pete Rose and Scott Rolen, and so on.

Indy is not the home of the Reds AAA team. The Indians are currently the AAA affiliate of the Pirates. The Indians used to be affiliated with the Reds, hence the number of Reds who used to be Indians.

The Indianapolis Indians are the current AAA team for the Pirates. They were the Reds farm team in the 90s.

Right. They switched to Milwaukee first, then Pittsburgh now. Cincinnati is memorable because of their location and because of the number of Reds stars who played in Indy - look at the past list of Indians MVPs, and you'll see quite a few players who had prominent careers in the majors. (This was true for their Montreal affiliation as well.)

The Reds do still have a reasonable fan base here because of the distance, but I wouldn't say that any one team is the clear favorite. Cubs, White Sox, Cardinals, bandwagons ... probably normal for a city that doesn't have a major-league team and isn't significantly closer to one team than to all others.

About 20 minutes in your future.
