Seahawks Reportedly Sign Miller Away From Oakland

No one can say Tarvaris Jackson doesn't have any weapons to work with. According to John Clayton, the Seahawks have outbid the Raiders for the services of the 26-year-old tight end. No monetary details yet, but it's probably a fairly big contract if the Raiders offered Miller anything close to the money they gave to the rest of their free agents.

EDIT: Here's the contract. Five years, $34 million, and $17 million guaranteed. That's all it took!

If the money is anywhere close, I don't blame him for wanting to GTFO Oakland. Even though they currently have Tarvaris throwing the passes, Seattle at least has the possibility of having a competent passer (and consistent coaching) in the future.

I'm sort of confused as to why people think he's all of a sudden got a lot more weapons to work with then he did in Minny. He now has Sidney Rice (which he had in Minny, no?), Zach Miller (pretty sure the Vikings have a decent, if not good, pass-catching TE), Washington, Lynch, and Forsett (which doesn't even come close to Peterson and 2 guys from a retirement house), and any combo of Obamanu, Butler, Williams, and Tate (I mean, I've heard of Harvin and Berrian, not to mention Camarillo and Aromashodu).

I'm just saying, he doesn't have better weapons here. I guess people are just thinking that since Seattle is adding all these new players, and Seattle now has better weapons, TJack now has better weapons and will magically become competent in the system that he couldn't figure out when he did have better weapons and played in a dome at least 9 games a year. Yeah, right...

Rice was hurt most of the time Jackson played, and when he was healthy he looked good even with Rice throwing him the ball. Also, Rice is a very young player, and they tend to improve as they get older.

As for the rest, I think your right. Still, Seattle should be better than last year right?

I don't see why Seattle will be better than last year.

Their schedule is significantly harder this year; they were the champions, and as a result they play all the other NFC champion teams. Compared to playing the 4th stringers from last year, that's a pain point.

They play the AFC North this year instead of the AFC West. Ouch.

They have replaced their offensive coordinator, their line coach, most of their offensive line, their quarterback, half of their receivers and their TE. The only continuity from last year's offense and this year's offense is the running backs (who were horrible last year) and one lineman. Typically churn like that does not signal good times, even with marginal upgrades.

Their defense was fairly marginal last year too, though part of that was injury. If they can avoid some of the injuries they may be better there. But only just.

Seattle might end up being a better team than last year. They'll still almost certainly have a worse record. And that upside is only if TJax ends up being as good as Hass was - which even given how meh he was is still a big question mark.

The problem with Seattle's running game wasn't the running backs. It was a travesty of an offensive line. Basically, the interior line was injured and terrible. I might also observe that this year there's a good chance their OL coach will make it all the way through preseason, which itself is a significant up grade.

That said, as a Seahawks season ticket holder it appears they've gone all in on the Andrew Luck sweepsteaks. Prediction? 4-12, 3 - 13.

Seattle finished 3rd in the division in 2009, Rams played the 4th stringers.

Like this for the hawks, but here's what I don't get:

John clayton speculates that carlson wil now go as part of a package for osi, and I've seen lots of seattle fans mention moving him for a draft pick.

Why wouldn't any of these teams supposedly into trading for carlson just have made an offer for miller? If the hawks and raiders were the only ones in on him, should we really expect there to be any market for a poor man's miller in carlson?

Because John Carlsons salary this year is 750k, and signing him to an extension would cost a lot less.

I'm guessing he means Nnamdi and Miller, with Seymour being the third guy (that they haven't lost).

On the subject of Raiders punting legends, Ray Guy has reportedly put his three Super Bowl rings up for auction on EBay. I'm thinking a few weeks' budget for Sierra Nevada could net at least one.

Also, very sadly, Bubba Smith has passed away. A terrific football player and Miller Lite actor.

Yes, but actually Miller and Aso were both injured and missed some significant playing time last season and the team still did ok. Other players had good years such as McFadden, Seymour, Stanford Routt and Michael Huff. Of these it is fair to say that only Seymour has a proven track record of consistent year-on-year production so, yeah, its dangerous for Oakland losing two such quality veterans, but not necessarily terminal.

Yeah well, at least they have the pieces in place for a passing game. If I were a fan of the Chargers or Chiefs, I'd be having nightmares of the stout Oakland offensive line giving Jason Campbell all day to scan the field and gouge defenses with bullets to Darius Heyward-Bey, Chaz Schilens, Lou Murphy, and Jacoby Ford. Not to mention their tight end (Myers?)creating havoc over the middle.

Miller has been productive through a large number of quarterbacks. In 2009 he had 66 receptions for 805 yards. The Raiders' entire passing game that year was 255 completions for 2557 yards. This was the Jamarcus Russell year. And people are saying that Tavaris Jackson can't hit him? Give me a break. I defy you to say that Tavaris Jackson is worse than Jamarcus Russell.
(Yeah, this belongs out at the first level, but here it is. My bad.)
