Senior V.P. of Officiating Dean Blandino Resigns

Hey, so, remember that thing where Dean Blandino in the NFL offices in New York was going to decide all replay reviews? Never mind. Blandino is leaving the NFL, likely to go to CBS as their officiating expert. Perhaps the league should have made sure its head of officiating was sticking around before making a rule change this offseason?

Steelers Owner Dan Rooney Dies at Age 84

Dan Rooney, the second-generation owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, has died at the age of 84. Rooney's move to take more control of the front office coincided with the rise of the Steelers in the 1970s; for example, he was a leading voice supporting the hire of Chuck Noll as head coach. Rooney also lobbied for a rule that required teams to interview minority coaching candidates, which now has his name. The Rooney Rule is imperfect, but at least it showed that owners acknowledged there was a problem. His son, Art Rooney II, will take over as chairman of the Steelers.

Tony Romo Retiring, Replacing Phil Simms at CBS

Maybe the Tony Romo saga doesn't end in Denver or Houston. Then again, maybe it does. With no trade interest, the Cowboys were apparently set to cut Tony Romo today. But now reports say that Romo will retire instead in order to pursue a career in broadcasting. In fact, he's wanted so badly as a color commentator (by both CBS and FOX) that it's possible a deal already exists and will be announced today.

Rules Changes: No More Leaping, Ejection for Egregious Head Hits

In addition to approving the centralization of all replay reviews at this week's meeting in Arizona, NFL owners approved two other rule changes Tuesday. First, they passed a tremendously anti-fun, sadly pro-safety rule to ban defensive players leaping over the offensive line on place kicks. Second, they approved an automatic ejection for egregious hits to the head, which will undoubtedly lead to more fevered columns than actual penalties in 2017.

It's Official: Las Vegas Raiders

It's official. Today at the NFL owners' meetings, the league voted to approve the move of the Raiders to Las Vegas. The vote was 31-1, with Stephen Ross of the Dolphins as the only holdout. Right now they are saying the Raiders will move in 2019, which means two years playing in front of the fans they are leaving behind. I can't imagine that will go well and I hope the promising Raiders don't go all 1995 Cleveland Browns in the upcoming season. I have a feeling they'll need to go to Vegas a year early and play at UNLV's stadium.

NFL Gives Blandino Final Say On Replays

The NFL is changing the way it handles instant replay reviews. Say goodbye to shots of on-field officials dipping their heads under hoods to look at monitors. Instead, all replays will be viewed in the NFL's offices in New York, and Senior Vice President of Officiating Dean Blandino will have final say on all replay calls.
