The kicker just got thrown out the window. And he was on fire.

Carson Palmer, who was set to be a free agent at the end of the season, has signed a three-year extension with the Arizona Cardinals. ESPN's Adam Schefter says the deal is worth about $50 million in total value.

In this week's Sunday Night Football column, I examine the decline in Brandon Marshall's DVOA. As the headline indicates, it's all about downfield throws.

We all know that Thursday night football feels extra sloppy. And it logically seems like it should be extra sloppy, since players haven't had a full week to recover from Sunday's games. But as others have done before, Kevin Seifert has run numbers showing that Thursday games do not in fact feature more injuries or less scoring. There are more turnovers, but also fewer penalties and the same number of dropped passes as in other games.

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has reached a plea agreement with Texas prosecutors that will keep him out of jail. That does not mean he will be on an NFL field anytime soon.
Peterson, who was facing up to two years in prison on child abuse charges, has agreed to plea no contest to one count of misdemeanor reckless assault. Peterson will be placed on probation and will pay a $4,000 fine and serve 80 hours of community service. He also will take parenting classes, and if he completes his probation without incident, there won't be a conviction on his record.

One of the most promising NFL careers in recent memory is over before it started. Marcus Lattimore, a star running back at South Carolina who suffered two gruesome knee injuries in college, has announced his retirement from pro football.
Lattimore led the SEC in yards from scrimmage before injuries ruined his career. The 49ers selected him in the fourth round of the 2013 draft in hopes he would be able to recover, but he was never able to suit up for a game, including the preseason.

The Houston Texans are 4-5, two games behind the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC South (and 0-1 against the Colts this season) and 1 1/2 games out of the wild card race. Ryan Fitzpatrick, though, is 25th in DVOA, and so the Texans are hoping for an upgrade by naming Ryan Mallett as their starting quarterback.

This piece by Summit, a data analysis advisory firm based in Washington, D.C., looks back at what college football's postseason might have looked like in recent years if the four-team playoff had begun in 2010. (Hint: I hope you like watching Alabama play football.)

Short-yardage passing had a good year, except at the end of the Super Bowl. We look at the return of quarterback runs, the rise in pass-happy strategy, and 2014 success rates for offense and defense.
