Deion Sanders Retires -- Maybe

Deion Sanders has said he is retiring, although he hasn't officially informed the Ravens or the league. If he is done, the 2011 Hall of Fame class could be a very good one, with Jerome Bettis already retired and Brett Favre, Junior Seau, and Marshall Faulk all considering it. (I assume Jerry Rice is eligible in 2010 since he retired before the 2005 season, although it's possible that participating in the Broncos' training camp would force him to wait a year for Hall eligibility.)

Leaf to Coach QBs at West Texas A&M

Yeah, I thought this was a headline from the Sports Pickle or the Onion too. But it's for real. Say what you want about Ryan Leaf the NFL football player, but I've heard from a couple of people that he invested wisely, and is pretty much set for life. So even though his career didn't work out, at least he won't end up on the "Where Are They Now?" edition of MTV Cribs.

Jauron: Losman, Holcomb will Compete

I've always hated the idea that a player should get a starting job by virtue of his being a first-round draft choice. It's obvious to anyone who has watched both Kelly Holcomb and J.P. Losman that Holcomb is the better player, and yet last year they split snaps. This year, Jauron says, they'll compete in training camp, and the better player will play. That seems like the right approach to me.

Jets Eye $8M Cut for Chad

Chad Pennington is scheduled to make $9 million in salary and bonuses for next season. Since the Jets are approxmately $26 million over the cap, they'd like Chad to restructure his contract. If they keep Pennington, he'll have a cap figure of $15 million. If they cut him, Pennington will still count $12 million against the cap. Will Pennington take one for the team and restructure? Why should he when the team has been rumored to be looking for a replacement for him either through free agency (Kerry Collins) or the draft (Jay Cutler)?

Cap not Good Fit for Chiefs

The Chiefs are roughly $20 million over the salary cap (Kansas City has obligations totaling $116 million for 2006, and the cap, which hasn't been set, is expected to be somewhere in the $95 million range). This means that if Herman Edwards and company are serious about acquiring T.O., some tough personnel decisions will have to be made. Interestingly, guys like Jerome Woods and Priest Holmes are cheaper to keep around, but Kendrell Bell, Eric Warfield and Dexter McCleon could get their walking papers. Thanks to Israel for the pointer. (free registration/bugmenot required)
