Referee Bill Leavy has been named to head the seven-man crew of game officials selected to work Super Bowl XL. You might remember Leavy as the referee who overturned the ruling on the field of a Denver first down with 2:01 left in the December Broncos-Chiefs game. That gave Kansas City the ball back and allowed the Chiefs to run out the clock. It was the right call and a gutsy call. Leavy is a good choice.

This is always one of my favorite pre-Super Bowl features. Paul Zimmerman goes through the Steelers and the Seahawks position-by-position and tells us which team has the better player.

A preview of my Super Bowl preview, audio style. Before we started I said I was going to keep this shorter and it ended up going a half hour anyway. I just like to talk football, I guess. There are a lot more pregnant pauses in this interview compared to the first one, probably an indication that I really need a nap that lasts, I dunno, two weeks or so.

Blue Horseshoe loves Grant Bowman. This should be a lesson to us all: If you get released from an NFL team, take a desk job, hope your team makes it to the Super Bowl, pray for an injury, and hope you get re-signed to the practice squad before the bus leaves for the airport.

For me, the endless drama that is the McNabb-Owens story can be described in one tidy little sentence: The gift that keeps on giving. This makes the "Jerome Bettis is from Detroit" angle almost seem fresh.

The Smoking Gun has finally gotten its hands on the police report that details the infamous incident of the Carolina Panthers cheerleaders in the bathroom stall. Hat tip: Deadspin.com.

I'm not sure what Jim Thomas means when he writes that Mike Martz has accepted an offer to become the Lions' offensive coordinator, only to add, "But it's not quite a done deal. As of mid-day Wednesday, contract terms had yet to be worked out." I don't think you've accepted an offer if you haven't agreed to a contract. But it sounds like this deal is going to get done, and if you're a Lions fan you have to be thrilled.

Scripps Howard News Service has conducted a study that concludes that NFL players often die young because they're too heavy. King Kaufman proposes that requiring players to play both offense and defense would force the largest players to shed some fat and improve their stamina, which would make them less likely to die of heart ailments.

Joey Porter is angry. Angry, angry, angry. Why so angry? Because Seattle tight end Jerramy Stevens has the unmitigated gall to actually believe that his team will win this game. How dare he! Seattle should be going into this game with the belief that they will lose; anything else is disrespectful to the Steelers. Then again, if Joey Porter is saying that the Seahawks have no right to say that they will win, isn't he disrespecting the Seahawks? They won more games, right?

The NFL Network had wall-to-wall coverage of Media Day, but some of the more, shall we say, ridiculous questions didn't make it on the air. No worries because this Seattle Post-Intelligencer article has it covered. My favorite? When Seahawks punter Tom Roen was asked, "If you had a nickel for every time someone said this game was about punting, how much money would you have?" He responded, "A nickel."

Blowout week, but not for the Steelers. Do they play down to the competition? Also: bad Foles, Bridgewater's debut, and did J.J. Watt just end EJ Manuel's career in Buffalo?
