NFL's Most Disappointing Teams

This list seems pretty exhaustive, but Eric of Off Wing Opinion also includes some thoughts about his favorite team, the New York Jets, even though they didn't make SI's final cut.

Vick Must Think Pass First

Skip Bayless offers Michael Vick some advice on how to get to the Hall of Fame, which is kind of like me offering Brad Pitt some advice on how to land Angelina Jolie.

TMQ: America's Only All-Haiku NFL Season Predictions!

This week's TMQ brings us America's only all-haiku NFL season predictions, some love for Pro Football Prospectus 2005 and an answer to perhaps the most important question of the preseason: which came off best in the Carl's Jr. commercial showing a soapy Paris Hilton washing a Bentley -- babe, burger or automobile?

Fantasy Player Protection

This is just kooky: Insurance for your fantasy football team. How much do you have to be spending on fantasy football to actually buy something like this? (Thanks to Lucas Ruprecht at Pro Trade for the link.)

MMQB: Preseason Awards and Predictions

In this week's MMQB, Peter King has some thoughts on Hurricane Katrina, the Giants getting an extra home game, and he even gets around to his preseason awards and predictions. The good news? King's not picking Jake Plummer for NFL MVP for the first time in two years, but he does think that Mike Tice could be coach of the year. He also breaks down some X's and O's, thinks the Eagles could keep T.O. for 2006, and talks about how Jerry Rice should be a good fit in Denver because he no longer needs to be the go-to guy.

Rice to Call it a Career

"Jerry Rice said he didn't want to play if he wasn't going to be at least the No. 3 receiver for the Denver Broncos. Informed that wasn't going to be the case, the NFL's all-time leading receiver opted to retire rather than ride the bench."

Hmmm. It's amazing what Rice has been able to do as a 40-something wide receiver, but I'm not sure if he's a No. 3 receiver on any team in the league.

Cuts o' Plenty

Let's see if we can do a quick roundup of the biggest cuts from yesterday's 53-man roster deadline. The Pats cut WR David Terrell. The Eagles cut DE Hugh Douglas and FB Jon Ritchie. The Chiefs ditched fourth-rounder Craphonso Thorpe, and headline writers wept. The Jags cut Fuamatu-Ma'afala, and spell-checkers cheered. San Francisco cut former top Denver pick CB Willie Middlebrooks. Miami cut RB Lamar Gordon, and Denver cut RB Quentin Griffin (following PFP's advice). Oakland cut DE Anttaj Hawthorne (so much for that supposed sixth-round steal) and TE Teyo Johnson (ACHTUNG!

Deion Challenges All Pros to Donate

I like making fun of Deion Sanders as much as the next guy, but I couldn't agree with him more on this one. (Thanks to reader BDelblanc for the pointer.)

Saints to Open in New Jersey

Obviously, there's no way to make this season normal for the New Orleans Saints. But is it heartless for me to say that this is unfair to Philadelphia, Dallas, and Washington? They couldn't find a neutral location for this game? I guess they don't want to make it look like the Saints are leaving Louisiana for good to move to San Antonio or Los Angeles, even though we've known for months, long before the devastation of this hurricane, that the Saints were probably leaving Louisiana for good to move to San Antonio or Los Angeles.

Forbes Ranks Skins No. 1 Again

For the sixth straight year, the Redskins are atop Forbes magazine's annual list of NFL franchise valuations at $1.26 billion, and their value has increased 15 percent since last year. This news led reader Jebmak to ask the following question: "[The Redskins] have over 100,000 people on the waiting list for tickets. Why oh why are people paying to see this team in action?" My guess is the post-game fireworks.
