It's official: the Arizona Cardinals are the worst team in football. Also, congratulations to the Oakland Raiders for their first victory of the season, but running back LaMont Jordan won't be satisfied with just not going winless: "11 and 5 is still out there." Granted, he said that following last week's loss to the Broncos, but since the proclamation the Raiders are 1-0. So watch out.

First San Diego loses to Kansas City and now this: "Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman has been notified he will be suspended for four games for violating the NFL's steroids policy, league and team sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen. Merriman's positive test was 'definitely for steroids … not one of those supplement deals' said a source with knowledge of Merriman's suspension."
No word on whether Luis Castillo was Merriman's supplier.

After last week's beatdown at the hands of the New York Giants, Michael Vick thinks pocket-passing might be the key to a longer career (dismiss the fact that New York sacked Vick seven times): "If I want to play until I'm 34, 35 years old, then I have to take that into consideration.... I think some people think I can't make plays [passing], but I can.... Tom Brady, Peyton [Manning], Donovan... they all throw from the pocket, make the right decisions, do the right things. I'm up there with Peyton and Brady and Donovan. I think I'm there with that group [as a passer].''

More defenses are blitzing this season and offenses are using more two-tight-end sets and shotgun formations in response. This USA Today article gives several reasons for defenses stepping up the pressure in 2006: poor early play and chemistry issues along the offensive line, and nearly half the league's teams have new offensive coordinators. Ron Jaworski is also quoted and, as usual, offers some good insights.

While I've thoroughly enjoyed watching the Saints this season, I've wondered -- more than once -- exactly how this team made such a turnaround. Obviously, adding Drew Brees and Reggie Bush help, and the emergence of rookie wide receiver Marques Colston was a nice little surprise, but teams often struggle with a new coaching staff. Especially following a three-win season that includes a hurricane demolishing the city. Whatever the reason, it's a great early-season story ...
