With players reporting in tip-top shape, minimizing training camp's importance might be the next logical step. Plus, any time you have 20 guys unable to practice because of injuries -- including the starting punter and kicker -- it's probably time to re-evaluate things.

In an entertaining helping of preseason picks and impressions, the good doctor sort of forgets that Joe Jurevicius' breakout season already happened last year, worries with others about the KC O-line, has trouble choosing an NFC East winner (indeed), and points to Tittle and Nomellini as the keys to the 49ers'...ummm...future?

I don't want to overreact, because this could be nothing, but Brett Favre has announced he will hold a news conference today. Athletes generally don't call news conferences in the middle of training camp unless they have something pretty important to say.
UPDATE: I was right. It really could be nothing.

Okay, things are getting ridiculous in Cleveland. According to The Plain Dealer, C Alonzo Ephraim will be suspended for the first four games of the regular season for violating the league substance-abuse policy. That's right, the Browns have gone through four centers since training camp started. Making matters worse, the team can't even trade oft-injured RB Lee Suggs because, not surprisingly, he failed a physical. (free registration/bugmenot required)

Apparently, Carson Palmer hasn't made his way back onto the field fast enough for Marvin Lewis. According to Len Pasquarelli, "It was reported during Sunday's nationally broadcast preseason game that Lewis had suggested the team needed to 'fish or cut bait with Carson Palmer.'" Lewis later backed off this statement, but the Bengals head coach does know that his backup is currently Anthony Wright, right?

After injuring his knee in last night's preseason game, Vikings first-round pick Chad Greenway is done for the season.
UPDATE: Things just got worse for Minnesota; Koren Robinson was arrested last night on suspicion of drunken driving.

Tony Kornheiser gets a less than stellar review from the Washington Post, of all places. To be fair, it's preseason for the announcing crew too, so I'm willing to cut Mr. Tony some slack. (free registration/bugmenot required)

Let's just hope no one in the studio fake-moons Joe Buck during the pregame show. The mock exasperated incredulity might be too much for Jimmy Johnson's hair.

D.J. Gallo don't need no stinkin' KUBIAK projections. Of course, he's sure to finish last in his league, but that kinda misses the point. No. 9 on his list might be my favorite.

Our offseason Four Downs series continues with a division-by-division look at each team's biggest remaining holes and their most notable UDFA signings. In the NFC North, quality wide receivers and defensive backs are in short supply.
