By now, everybody knows that Antonio Gates was a really good college basketball player who never played football before signing with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent. Rick Gosselin takes a look at how tight end has evolved into a basketball position, and he points to several former basketball players likely to be taken early in next month's NFL draft as proof. And if you happen to catch any of the George Mason-Florida game tomorrow, keep an eye out for Jai Lewis (#55 on George Mason). Lewis is 6'7", 275 lbs.

I found this article on a Steelers message board and even though it was written almost twelve months ago, because we're right in the middle of all the draft talk, it's still timely. The bottom line: all 40 times are not created equally. (free registration/bugmenot required)

The NFL has changed its rules to limit end zone celebrations, allow down-by-contact calls to be reviewed on replay, prohibit pass rushers from hitting quarterbacks on the knee or below, more strictly enforce horse-collar tackles, and prohibit defensive players from lining up directly over a long snapper.

Good thing the Bills traded up in the 2004 draft to nab J.P. Losman with the 22nd overall pick because now it looks like they want to trade him. And it gets worse: he's on the trading block because Buffalo feels like career backup Craig Nall has a good chance to win the starting job with Kelly Holcomb serving as the number two guy. Thanks to reader JonL for the pointer.

For all the talk about Mack Brown simplifying Texas's offense for Vince Young, Jim Mora is looking to do exactly that for Michael Vick: "What we've done this off-season is we've looked at Texas, West Virginia and Missouri and some of their shotgun run stuff and the way they use their quarterbacks in their system." Given that Vick has struggled at times in the West Coast Offense, this seems like a good idea.

We don't talk a lot about college football here, but this is worth mentioning. University of Virginia head coach Al Groh has dismissed three players from the team and LB Ahmad Brooks was one of them. Brooks at one time was considered the best linebacker in the country and after being named an All-American two seasons ago, he has since struggled with injuries and off-field issues. Brooks can either choose to transfer or make himself eligible for the supplemental draft.

We already have a thread about the other rules changes being discussed at the owners' meeting, but we haven't addressed the proposal to crack down on end zone celebrations. The link goes to an NFL.com column that says it's a good idea, but I give credit to NFL Network's Rich Eisen and Adam Schefter for saying on the air that they think it's silly for the league to be worried about such things. If you have NFL Network, be sure to watch today's Total Access.

Despite Matthew Furtek's protests, the NFL today announced 32 compensatory picks have been awarded to 19 teams, and the New York Jets have the highest selection: a third rounder coming their way for the loss of LaMont Jordan. Yep, that LaMont Jordan.

As has become its custom in recent years, the NFL announces its national TV games for opening weekend, with Miami@Pittsburgh in the Thursday opener, the "Manning Bowl" on Sunday Night, and a Monday Night double-header, as well as the first-ever Thanksgiving triple-header.
