Leonard Shapiro gives us a glimpse into how Dan Snyder runs the Redskins. Apparently, having a GM is pretty important; and so is having an owner who doesn't make personnel decisions -- just ask Steve Spurrier. (Bugmenot/free registration required; thanks to reader Ekernas for the pointer.)

I was just telling someone that I think Larry Johnson is a better player than Priest Holmes right now. How disappointing to see that he was arrested Monday night after an altercation with his girlfriend early Saturday morning at a Kansas City bar, the latest in a series of troubles with the law for Kansas City Chiefs players. When will Chiefs players learn to stay out of the bar scene? Already this preseason we saw Todd Collins, Lawrence Tynes, Junior Siavii, and Greg Wesley get into trouble.

A disturbing story out of Pittsburgh, where former Steelers lineman Terry Long died from a brain inflammation that resulted, in part, from repeated head injuries suffered while playing football. Long, 45, died on June 7, a few hours after paramedics found him unconscious at his home. A contributing factor was "chronic traumatic encephalopathy" - also known as dementia pugilistica - a condition most often seen among career boxers.

This week, Gregg Easterbrook has a warning for professional football, mentions the Bills' old school unis (as an FO reader predicted in a thread earlier this week), makes fun of the Vikes for not going for it on fourth down, and ridicules rich dumb people.
TMQ also offers some advice on how to stop the Colts' offense, wonders why the Chargers' suspended Antonio Gates, and actually manages to use "Nocturne Aubergine Klavierlack" in a sentence.
And two more things: Stats of the Week No. 4 should give Kyle Boller hope, and if you bet the Earlham-Manchester game, I hope you took the over.

A pregame scuffle between the Falcons and Eagles resulted in Jeremiah Trotter and Kevin Mathis being ejected. This happened before a Florida-Florida State game once. Has anyone ever seen it in the NFL? I don't think I've ever seen an official throw a flag during pregame warmups. The ref is looking in the replay booth to see what happened, which I believe is improper, as there's no listing in the rule book that allows the ref to review such things. Are you ready for some football?

Hope you didn't pick Patrick Ramsey as your quarterback in the Loser League contest. Instead of waiting to see if Ramsey will be able to play Sunday after suffering a sprained neck, Joe Gibbs decided to name Mark Brunell the starter right away. I'm guessing the Redskins are on their third starting QB by Week 5.

This is a major blow to a team many expected to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. Kris Jenkins tore his ACL in Sunday's opener against the Saints. He'll miss the rest of the season. Jenkins established himself as one of the best players in football in 2003, but he missed 12 games last year with a shoulder injury and now won't be on the field again until 2006.

Does Brett Favre have any thoughts on Walker's contract situation now?
UPDATE: As is mentioned in the comments and is now in the linked article, Walker is done for the year. Now Favre can back up his pre-season statements that they did not need Javon to win.

In Peter King's Week 1 MMQB, he pleads with Saints owner Tom Benson to keep the team in New Orleans, gives Willie Parker some props, uses the phrase "defense of the week" to describe ... gasp! ... the Chiefs, and names Chad Pennington the Goat of the Week. King also pimps the Drew Bledsoe-Burger King commercial, gives due respect to Rodney Harrison, and recognizes Ohio University -- his alma mater -- as they beat the Miami Dolphins of the Big East, the Pitt Panthers.

Will Adrian Peterson leave Minnesota for a warmer climate in 2015?
