Orakpo, Carriker Out For Year
Mike Shanahan announced at his press conference today that Redskins outside linebacker Brian Orakpo had torn his pectoral muscle and would be out for the year. Defensive end Adam Carriker, re-signed this offseason, tore his quadriceps tendon and is also out for the year. Good luck, Jim Haslett, you're going to need it.

Funny. But fortunately, they actually do have decent depth. There will be a considerable drop-off in talent, sure, but it's not like they have to scramble to find replacement-level guys. I expect they'll move Kerrigan to Orakpo's spot to rush the QB's blind side, and though I thought Rob Jackson looked awful filling in last week, the guys at the Washington Post seem to think he played well, and maybe they know.

And Fred Davis has a concussion. Probably when he got punched in the face yesterday, while the replacement ref who was supposed to see it was probably looking at a cheerleader or hot dog.

I think they went all negligent in the 2nd half after throwing a bunch of ticky-tack flags in the 1st. That game was horribly officiated, but I don't believe it affected the outcome.

I'm not mad about the outcome, the Rams won, congrats.
My problem is the refs had no control over the game...probably because if was like the C- level squad of replacement refs for a game not many were going to see. It was easy to spot a difference in that game vs even a minute of Lions/49ers where people weren't nearly fighting after every single play.

Of course it affected the outcome! Being bad in two different ways is not the same as being good.
Would Josh Morgan have thrown the ball at Cortland Finnegan if the Rams had been called for a personal foul on a blow to Fred Davis's head just a few minutes earlier? The Redskins were livid that, instead of personal foul call on the defense, the refs whistled the Redskins for holding.
In the last five minutes of the game, three penalties were called, all on the Redskins. The Rams were pushing and shoving as much as the Redskins were, but were not whistled for anything.
On the play when Morgan was whistled for throwing the ball at Finnegan, Finnegan had provoked him by pushing him after the play was over. It's certainly arguable that both players should have whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct. While a simple shove isn't usually whistled as a penalty, it seems less than fair to let Cortland Finnegan help his team win a game by instigating.

A penalty on Finnegan on that play would have been very much a ticky-tack one. That sort of shove happens when players are getting up on about 50% of plays.
It was a wildly entertaining game to watch in part because the refs were so bad. I mean, at one point there was a scrum of pushing and shoving on a kickoff that resulted in a touchback. By the end, the refs might as well have said "right, we're not penalising anyone on this play, so go nuts, but next play we'll throw a flag".
The battle for worst missed call is quite a good one. IMO (and I'm a Rams fan) it wasn't the couple of TDs we should have had in the first half (the Gibson one, although that was tight and its on Fisher to challenge, and the Jackson one where he... got annoyed) or the monumental clusterhump where Fisher had to challenge a fumble recovered by the Redskins because the refs were just getting ready to run the next play without confirming the fumble (and it was clearly not a fumble), but not penalising Fisher for throwing the flag on an automatically reviewable play (which is a stupid rule IMO. If a coach wants to challenge something even though its automatically challenged, let him).
The worst was probably the blatant personal foul by Ojinnaka on London Fletcher late in the fourth quarter, right before Fletcher forced the fumble. Ojinnaka just dived into him on the grow way away (and after the play) in front of a ref, nothing given. Could have made a huge difference if Fletcher hadn't forced a fumble on the next play.

Don't forget the uncalled unnecessary roughness in the 1st quarter when Lo-Jonn Dunbar punched Griffin in the facemask while he was on the ground while the refs were busy penalizing Griffin for intentional grounding.

Rams got boned in the 1st half, Redskins got boned in the 2nd half. It was a brutally officiated game. Really embarrassing for the NFL.

It was a terribly officiated game, and the Rams were robbed of an SJax TD... but the dirty play was decidedly Rams-heavy, and among the dirtiest games I've seen in a long time. Constant late hits, head hunting receivers and RG3 when he ran, etc.. Is that a Jeff Fischer hallmark? I never saw Tennessee outside the playoffs where that stuff is less frequent generally.

I've heard a lot of people complain about the Fisher Titans being dirty. It was a team that employed Albert Haynesworth and Cortland Finnegan after all.

Yeah. Those two were the worst offenders, but far from the only ones. Schwartz seems to have taken the same attitude with him to Detroit. I think it's fair to assume it stems from the coach.

It was an odd game, because early on the teams were getting penalised a lot, and then at some point in the second quarter just decided that they'd have a fight after every play, and the refs would just let them.
Head hunting RG3 when he runs though? That's legal, and everyone does it. I enjoyed him having a shout at the refs about it though.
I counted two personal foul penalties that should have been called on the Rams. One on Ojinnaka on Fletcher on a late hit, and the Jenkins one on Fred Davis. The Ojinnaka one was pure dirty, but the Jenkins one wasn't entirely intentional IMO - he clearly aimed for shoulder-to-chest, but slid up on contact and hit his chin. At first view I thought it was a legal hit (and was shouting at the commentators to that effect. On replays? Not so much!
The Redskins also got 2 personal foul calls given on their first offensive TD drive, one on a late hit on Griffin that was clearly in bounds, and wasn't even much more than a slight tap anyway (on third down, well short of the sticks) and one on Robert Quinn that I never saw a replay of, so can't judge.
I think by the end, the Rams must have basically decided that the refs weren't going to call much, so they might as well just go nuts. It was entertaining to watch the anger move from Fisher early to Shanahan late on!

The 2 penalties for the Redskins mentioned in the last para happened at 3.03 and 0.27 in the first quarter. The first is a shocking call. Griffin isn't out of bounds, it doesn't particularly look like he's going to go out of bounds on his own, and he's barely touched. Just looked at the second one now (that didn't get a replay), must have been well after the play and on the tackle, not on Griffin as I assumed.
Prior to that, there was also a penalty on London Fletcher at 14.28 in the first quarter that wasn't a good call, as Amendola wasn't quite out of bounds yet, although he was on his way out. It had the look of "player relaxing as he goes out of bounds and gets hit unawares", but he's got to keep going until the play is over.
The Jenkins one was at 4.54 in the 4th. On a second look today, it looks worse than I thought. Yesterday I thought he hit the middle of the chest and slid up to the chin, but in the cold light of day, he just whacked him in the chin.
The Ojinnaka was at 3.33 in the 4th. Ojinnaka is the left guard, as the play is finishing he and what looks like Barry Richardson pushed Fletcher to the floor and Ojinnaka looks a Fletcher then just jumps on him. I guess he could claim that he wasn't looking at the play, and the whistle only blows just as he hits Fletcher, but its an unnecessary, dirty hit that should have been called.
The one Griffin was getting annoyed at was at 1.40 in the first. I can see why he was getting annoyed, because it was an attempt at a big hit and he was trying to get out of bounds, but he wasn't out of bounds and it was a legal attempt.
I get to chart the first half of this game. I suspect my comments will be "Awful call by the refs" on most plays.

There's never been a Jeff Fisher team that wasn't dirty.

I think this is just going to lead to another RGIII - Cam Newton comparison. An exciting QB who puts up stats - and loses because the D can't stop anyone. Not that anyone thought Washington was going to the playoffs this year, but this just about makes it official.

The redskins season is officially over. They are not a good enough team to be able to make up for losses to atrocious teams likes the rams and losing their best defensive player (along with a decent one) with all the easy points they gave up to a bad offense means that they have no chance of winning 9 games. Unfortunately, an orakpo injury last year would have helped them tank but there is no reason to tank without a first rounder this year

I think you're jumping to conclusions in saying the Rams are atrocious. They're not good, by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't think it's at all clear (or even that likely) they're the car crash they were in 2011.

The Redskins will still contend for the playoffs this year. After last week, for the first time in maybe my football viewing lifetime, I thought "it's okay, the 'Skins showed enough consistency on offense to win plenty of games, they can afford a stray loss here."
RGIII, in this system, is as good as any QB in the league, and a team with a QB this good is always going to contend for the playoffs.

Bob is still, at best, the 3rd best QB in the division.
If the Skins were in the NFC West, I'd probably agree with you WRT the playoff contention. But they are atrocious in the secondary, and with Orakpo and Carriker out that's going to be magnified, don't have any WR that requires a double team, and they might be down their best receiving threat with a concussion. I think Bob's going to get a full time spy from the defense going forward, and I think as there's more game film on him, defensive co-ordinators will be able to game-plan him much better.
Don't get me wrong, I think the sky's the limit for Bob. But it's not happening this year.

Right. I'd back Griffin to go to Canton at even money, but he's not yet a top ten quarterback in this or any system, and I think the Skins probably win 6 or 7 games this year.
