Reported terms: five years, $40 million, ~$19 million guaranteed. Jay Glazer broke the story.
The Saints had to make a choice between Colston and Carl Nicks, and this contract seems like a decent value all things considered. Since Nicks was demanding to be the highest-paid guard in the NFL, it makes plenty of sense to go with Colston.

Lane Johnson and D.J. Fluker were selected high in the draft, but both have troubling flaws in pass protection according to Word of Muth.

5 years, $40 Million, "just under half guaranteed."
Re: Saints Re-Sign Marques Colston
That's a very reasonable deal for the Saints, and I bet that it'll look even better for them once we see what some of these other WRs get.
Re: Saints Re-Sign Marques Colston
Exactly. Especially when you consider that he's been more productive than Vincent Jackson (for example) at a much lower price.

Sports talk radio and sports message boards are the killing fields of intellectual discourse.
Re: Saints Re-Sign Marques Colston
Well, 'these other' WRs are now...really just VJax. And he should give Colston a commission - Colston's signing just made VJax a much richer man.
Re: Saints Re-Sign Marques Colston
Isn't Bowe still a free agent as of right now?
Re: Saints Re-Sign Marques Colston
Bowe got franchise tagged.
Re: Saints Re-Sign Marques Colston
Is Reggie Wayne a free agent? Or just likely to be cut/traded?
Re: Saints Re-Sign Marques Colston
Free agent
Re: Saints Re-Sign Marques Colston
I think VJax will get a lot more than Colston did, and at least one of the next tier of WRs (Manningham, Garcon, etc.) will end up in the same neighborhood as Colston's $8M/yr.
Re: Saints Re-Sign Marques Colston
And there it is - Garcon gets more than Colston. Ridiculous.
Re: Saints Re-Sign Marques Colston
It's a very reasonable price, especially considering how someone is likely to way overpay a 29 year old Vincent Jackson.
The concern I would have for the Saints is that I think Brees is likely more dependent on superior offensive line talent than other great qbs, just because he is shorter. Yes, they compensate for his height by moving him around, but losing the best guard in the league is going to hurt against the defenses which can collapse the pocket from the middle. Put Justin Smith against an average guard in the playoff game 7 weeks ago, and the Niners don't likely need any shocking late game heroics from Alex Smith.
Re: Saints Re-Sign Marques Colston
This Falcons fan is praying that some team (not necessarily Atlanta) throws money at Carl Nicks and pries him away from the Saints. I'm so tired of seeing Drew Brees step up into the pristine pocket provided by his stellar interior OL.
Re: Saints Re-Sign Marques Colston
Maybe you should be praying the Falcons acquire some pass-rushers.
