Schaub Signs Extension with Texans
Per Mark Berman of FOX 26, the Houston Texans signed Matt Schaub to a four-year extension worth $62 million, with $24.7 million of that guaranteed. Houston is now locked into Schaub long-term, and despite his tendency to miss games, they're probably going to need a quarterback of his caliber to have a realistic hope of winning a Super Bowl. Hard to argue with re-signing him based on that logic, but this is riskier than most long-term extensions for good quarterbacks.

It's . . . more money than I'd hoped, but I think the Texans pretty much had to do this. TJ Yates is better than anyone has any right to expect from a fifth round pick, but that's all, and they have no realistic chance of signing another quarterback of Schaub's class if they let him walk.

Yeah, I like to ask the Schaub haters if not him, who else? They passed on Manning (which I agree with). No other big-name QB's are going to be available during the current window. He's not in the Brees/Brady/Rodgers class, but they just locked him up for about half what Brees cost. Actually does not seem like a bad deal.

Are there any Schaub haters out there? I feel like every QB ranking or tiering system I see has him pegged the same, somewhere between 10th and 16th in the league, which feels dead-on to me.
But yes, the original point you're agreeing with is correct. You have to overpay for a QB, because having a reliably productive one increases your odds of winning a championship more than anything else. Look at what it took for the Bears to acquire Cutler or the Redskins to acquire Griffin.

There's no such thing as overpaying for a good QB. Roughly speaking, a third of a team's result is probably QB performance in the modern NFL. That's not to say you can't overpay for a QB (Ask the Rams how they feel about Bradford's contract), but Brees, Manning, et al. are worth every penny.

I think pretty much 100% of Schaub haters are Houston fans. They're mostly (though not entirely) the UT types who are still bitter that the Texans didn't draft Vince Young.
