Nobody would have batted an eyelash at this move after Cam Newton's rookie year, but Chudzinski becoming head coach of the Browns this year is a bit more puzzling. Still, Cleveland was looking for someone who could open up the offense a little bit after missing on Chip Kelly, and this definitely gives them that.

Re: Browns Tab Rob Chudzinski As Next Head Coach
Well, that's somebody I guess. Has to be a bit of a letdown for Browns fans. Still, good luck to him.
Re: Browns Tab Rob Chudzinski As Next Head Coach
I don't see it as a letdown. It's an upgrade from a dink-and-dunk offense by a coach who has never ranked outside the bottom tier offensively as a coach/OC/etc. to one whose offense has generally ranked fairly high.
Re: Browns Tab Rob Chudzinski As Next Head Coach
I read it not as being a let down from Shurmur, but a let down from some of the other names that were being tossed around.
Re: Browns Tab Rob Chudzinski As Next Head Coach
Even compared to them.
Whisenhunt has to be held at least partially responsible for the Cards' meltdown this past season.
DVOA shows that Arians' accomplishments this past season may be a bit of a mirage, and his health problems are a bit of a concern. He did get a lot out of the Browns in 2002, but I know that many Steelers fans didn't like his playcalling recently all that much.
Chip Kelly is hard to judge...he could've turned out to be as good as Pete Carroll, or a complete disaster.
Re: Browns Tab Rob Chudzinski As Next Head Coach
Yes, that's what I meant. But, as was mentioned somewhere in here, the idea of Chip Kelly may be much more satisfying than the reality of him. So, who knows? I hope for Cleveland's sake this fellow turns out to be a solid choice.
Re: Browns Tab Rob Chudzinski As Next Head Coach
People in Cleveland will have all sorts of unflattering nicknames for this guy by halftime of week one.

Cannibalistic Humanoid Undeegroudb Dweller. This giy going to AFC Nirth to unleash hell. Watch out Ravens, Steekers and Bengals. Good chance Norc Turner going to be offensve coordinator for Beowns. So offensive players goingnt have to answer to a CHUD and a Norv
Re: Browns Tab Rob Chudzinski As Next Head Coach
Did they have to do a nationwide search for that? Couldn't they just find C.H.U.D. in the Dog Pound?
Re: Browns Tab Rob Chudzinski As Next Head Coach
Somehow I knew RaiderJoe would be the one to weigh in with a C.H.U.D. reference. ;)
Seriously, though, the guy seems to be a good, flexible offensive mind, and we know that Norval can put together a quality offense when given a solid line, a game manager, and a beast for a back. Sounds like a good fit.

Re: Browns Tab Rob Chudzinski As Next Head Coach
As a Panthers fan, I'm sad that he's leaving. I kept hearing that he was going to be a hot hire after 2011, but he stayed. I didn't hear a word about him after 2012, and he left. Go figure.
Re: Browns Tab Rob Chudzinski As Next Head Coach
It's actually kind of interesting, the narrative about the Panthers. They were 6-10 in 2011 and everyone saw them as an up-and-coming team, full of energy and excitement and Good Things. In 2012, they started slow and Cam Newton sat around sulking with a towel over his head, and everyone was down on them, and the fact that they won games down the stretch and actually ended up with a better record seems to get completely overlooked.
Chudzinski will not have Cam Newton to help his offense look good in Cleveland. On the other hand, Chudzinski managed to run an offense that made Derek Anderson into an All-Pro for one year, so I wish him luck.
Re: Browns Tab Rob Chudzinski As Next Head Coach
Nit-pick: Anderson was not an all-pro in 2007 (Brady, Favre)
Re: Browns Tab Rob Chudzinski As Next Head Coach
Anti-nit: He made it in as an injury replacement. (Or possibly an "injury" replacement...)
Re: Browns Tab Rob Chudzinski As Next Head Coach
There are no injury-replacements for the All-Pro team, as they exist only on paper, and do not play against another team. You're thinking of the Pro Bowl, which is a nice achievement (sometimes...), but not as highly regarded as being on the All-Pro team, which is much more exclusive.
Re: Browns Tab Rob Chudzinski As Next Head Coach
And the Panthers still improved by a game after the slow start, which was due to a very front-loaded schedule. Their problems were more on defense.
Also, he is picking Norv Turner as his OC (a very good OC choice, not so much as a head coach.)
Word on the street is a switch back to a 3-4, or a Ravens-style hybrid, which probably means trading Jabaal Sheard and investing heavily in trades/FA for linebackers.
As far as offense goes, this is probably good news for Weeden, whom I still support. Look for Kellen Winslow to get another shot at resurrecting his career, and look for major investments in a veteran TE other than Winslow and a veteran WR.
Re: Browns Tab Rob Chudzinski As Next Head Coach
Browns could get d. Keller. Rhink guy will be freeagent.
Re: Browns Tab Rob Chudzinski As Next Head Coach
Now that hurts my hometown Panthers. Can we send Derek Anderson back to Cleveland and get Chud back?
Re: Browns Tab Rob Chudzinski As Next Head Coach
And now he's got the Norv for OC. Will it matter? Does it ever matter for the Browns?
