What's the best way for analytics to help teams? The answer is pretty clear. We don't write about it much at FO because it's all internal data that we can't get on the outside, but the best analytics are the sports science analytics that will improve player performance and help prevent injuries. We know how to prevent a lot of the non-contact preseason injuries that are caused by a "one size fits all" method of practice and a poor understanding of how to slowly ease into conditioning. But the data doesn't help if the coaches won't change their ways.

As is now an annual tradition, Deadspin brings the world a survey of the fabulous Football Outsiders Almanac 2015, with a paragraph from each of the 32 NFL chapters to give you a taste of the book if you haven't bought it yet. (And if you haven't bought it yet, why not? Sterling has tuition payments and Scott needs money for dinner.)

A couple of very unfortunate injuries today at practice: one predictable, one not. The latter would be Panthers wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin, who will now miss his second NFL season after tearing his ACL trying to cut on a pass route. I certainly don't need to explain to FO readers just how much the Panthers had a two-man passing game last year: Greg Olsen and Benjamin. This is a huge loss for the Panthers. Meanwhile, down in Miami, Louis Delmas tore his right ACL for the second time in nine months. The guy just can't stay healthy.

Well, so much for those stories about Philip Rivers not wanting to follow the San Diego Chargers to Los Angeles if they decide to move. Rivers is locked in now after signing a new four-year extension that includes $65 million in guaranteed money. Rivers has been that rare animal, the somewhat quietly great quarterback. He's been in the DVOA and DYAR top 10 in seven of his nine years as a starter. On the other hand, we'll have to see if he's able to age as well as Peyton Manning and Tom Brady have. Rivers turns 34 near the end of the season and will be 38 when this contract ends.

Mike and Tom finally get a shot at the southern divisions and wade through the fetid morass of mediocrity. Look out for Hott Takez!
