Brian Hoyer: Out with a deep bruise to his right shoulder/bicep area.
Johnny Manziel: Out with a hamstring injury.
And so the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback against Baltimore will be Connor Shaw, an undrafted rookie out of South Carolina who has spent 16 weeks on Cleveland's practice squad. Shaw will be the Browns' 22nd different starting quarterback in the past 16 years, joining such luminaries as Spergon Wynn, Ken Dorsey, and Thaddeus Lewis.
Shaw started for three years for the Gamecocks, twice finishing second in the SEC in completion percentage.

The Kansas City Chiefs' minuscule playoff odds have taken another hit. Starting quarterback Alex Smith will miss the must-win Week 17 game against San Diego with a lacerated spleen. Chase Daniel will start in Smith's place. It will be the second start of Daniels' career. The first? Week 17 last year, also against San Diego.

This week's Sunday Night Football column for NBC Sports looks at Ryan Lindley and playoff teams that have started three (or more!) quarterbacks in the regular season. That list includes four Super Bowl champions, none of whom played any of their backups in the playoffs. Lindley? Available evidence indicates he just might be really, really bad, but I outline a potential minimal gameplan for him.

Possibly the closest Super Bowl matchup in history also poses the question: how much does it mean when certain aspects of an NFL team improve dramatically in the second half of the season?
