Peyton Manning, Sexual Assault and a Little Healthy Skepticism

The general rule at Football Outsiders is that we stay away from posting Extra Points on player off-field behavior until that behavior is going to affect what happens on the field. We try to stay away from sensationalizing huge controversies, whether that's sexual assault charges or alleged drug use or Deflategate. When Shaun King decided to disinter allegations against Peyton Manning from nearly 20 years ago, I really, really didn't want to go there. However, I think our old friend Mike Tanier wrote such a good piece today on the complexities of this story that I decided I had to point our readers to it.

Jim Schwartz's Attack Defense

It's the offseason, so you have time to read scheme pieces if you so desire. Fran Duffy of the Philadelphia Eagles' website, who does consistently good work and is a good draft follow as well, has a great piece breaking down Jim Schwartz's defense, with plenty of clips from Detroit and Buffalo of how it's supposed to work.

Raiders to Play in Oakland in 2016

Ending the unrealistic-but-not-impossible speculation that the Raiders might leave Oakland this season, Rachel Swan of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the football team signed a lease to stay in O.co. Coliseum for 2016, with one-year options for 2017 and 2018. The long-term future of the team is still in doubt, with San Antonio and Las Vegas among the cities that have met with the Raiders about relocation. And if the Chargers are able to get a new stadium deal to stay in San Diego, then it's also possible that the Rams and Raiders will end up sharing a stadium in Los Angeles.

Sources: Calvin Johnson Has Told Lions He Will Retire

I never quite know at what point we should be posting news of the "sources report" variety. I usually prefer for a trade or retirement or cut to actually be announced. But at this point there have been enough reports that Calvin Johnson is going to retire that I think we can consider this one on the up-and-up. Johnson is still playing at a high level -- he was eighth in DYAR and 16th in DVOA among wide receivers this year -- and the Lions are going to miss him significantly on the field.

NFL Announces Super Bowl 50 Golden Team

The NFL has announced its all-time Super Bowl 50 Golden Team, "celebrating the best overall career performances in the Super Bowl." As you would expect, the roster is dominated by Steelers -- seven Pittsburgh players made the list, followed by five Cowboys, four 49ers, three Raiders, and three Packers. (Though that tally gets complicated by Deion Sanders and Charles Haley, each of whom played in a Super Bowl with both Dallas and San Francisco. I just counted one as a 49er, one as a Cowboy.) Only one Patriot makes the list: kicker Adam Vinatieri.
