I know we shouldn't put too much stock in preseason performances, but is anybody else concerned about the Redskins? From the article: "The Redskins have been outscored, 87-17, in three games. Their first-team offense has not produced a point, while in three games the largely first-team defense has given up 46, including 27 against the Patriots."

Okay, raise your hand if you saw this coming.

Only months after signing him to a multi-year contract extension, the Vikings waived Koren Robinson on Saturday. While this might be the best move for the Vikings, it's hard to imagine that it's the best thing for Koren Robinson, the person.

Anybody remember Brian Jackson? No? Well, here's a refresher: "A man charged with impersonating Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to get dates was accused of stealing $3,200 from a different woman by telling her he was another player on the team, tight end Jerame Tuman." Hey, at least he gave up on the Brian St. Pierre charade.

You know what really grinds my gears? All these guys signing one-day contracts. Among the guys who have been reported to sign one-day contracts to retire with a team are Jerry Rice, Junior Seau, Derrick Alexander, Randall Godfrey, and Tim Brown. Am I the only one who doubts whether they're signing them at all? What, exactly, is the point? It's obviously not a real contract: as Mike Florio has pointed out, these teams don't have any extra roster space to add a player for a day.

Whenever someone asks me about Pac-Man Jones, I tell them what the book says -- he had a much better rookie year than people realize, and he has a great instinct for the game, but he needs maturity. It looked like he had really grown up in training camp this year, until he went and got himself arrested again last night.

Let us now praise great punters. Not ROBO-PUNTERs, but great punters nonetheless.

It looks like everybody in the Redskins organization is happy with the T.J. Duckett trade except for his new backfield mates. Coach Joe Gibbs says not to worry, however, because all the running backs are making the team and all will contribute. So Ladell Betts, Rock Cartwright and Mike Sellers, your jobs are safe ... for now. (free registration/bugmenot required)

Tom Brady might be the happiest person on the planet right now. Closely followed by Reche Caldwell.
UPDATE: Uh, maybe I got a little ahead of myself on this one; the Pats released the following statement today: “The New England Patriots have given Deion Branch permission to seek a trade and negotiate a contract with other clubs. This permission will extend until September 1, 2006. Deion Branch's agent might want to start working on that resume.

The Washington Redskins have traded a third-round pick to the Atlanta Falcons for running back T.J. Duckett. The Falcons then turned around and traded a third-round choice to Denver for wide receiver Ashley Lelie. Does this mean Portis' injury is more serious than first reported? Lelie is an interesting replacement for Brian Finneran but it seems to me that he duplicates Roddy White's strengths and weaknesses. Perhaps with Vick's arm strength, maybe it is best to have two deep threats. Anyway, I'm off to screw with KUBIAK yet again...

Thanks a lot, Dak Prescott. Now more people will think the fourth round is still a gold mine for quarterbacks, but the data says otherwise. The update to our quarterback draft study for 1994-2016 shows little has changed: finding a good QB is really hard.
