Greg Cosell's Mock Draft

I know that Cosell's mocks don't often jive with conventional wisdom, but I figured this would make a nice catch-all draft discussion thread while we wait out the next day-and-a-half. (Here's the second half of the first round.)

I think it's funny that this was a serious article. I really laughed at some of the selections.

It's really misleading to call this a "Mock Draft"; mock drafts have come to mean: "This is how I expect the draft to go". Cosell's picks are totally based on watching tape and team needs, and are not related to where players are expected to be picked.

It's not totally relevant, but it's worth noting.

I want to see Mock Drafts where the expert labels which 50% of the 1st Round will be Busts and which 0-5 will be Superstars

Well, you're in luck: there's a whole damn website of that stuff over at bleacherreport. Ignore the highly creepy overuse of the word "stud," and it becomes enjoyable. You see, looking at 19-year olds predict the success of players they have probably seen 2 times in total is quite fun, right? Right?

Please don't go to bleacherreport, there are maybe 4 good writers out of hundreds.

I'm referring to people like Kiper, McShay, etc

Why don't they rename bleacherreport to wemakelotsoflists.com?

Already taken by Buzzfeed.

I may be in the minority, but I like Cosell's draft analysis a great deal.

He's an self-described game tape nerd and quite frankly, it's amazing to me how much stock is put into things (e.g., combine, pro day, etc.) that aren't based on past performance like game film.

Sure he might not get the picks at all right in a projection format...but that's not really what I want to read in draft coverage...I'd rather know which kids project to the NFL well vs. kids who don't and I think he does that job very well.

Now, that being said...if Arthur Brown in on the board when the Colts pick and they draft Rhodes...I'm going to be seriously pissed...the Colts LBs are so bad and out-schemed with Pagano's system...something has to be done there.

Hey! I thought of the Colts LBs as an area of strength last year. (at least compared to the DL, CBs, safeties...) Primarily that strength is the ILB spot; they surely need an effective pass rusher whether he comes from the OLB spot (more likely) or DE spot (possible).

I wonder where they will go--It's a draft where nobody seems excited about any of the players (exceptions: their mothers and college coaches)--I've seen the terms "historically bad" and "worst in a decade" bandied about. We need to see some sort of parody written in which EVERYBODY trades out of the first round to rack up multiple later picks and picks for next year! Maybe the NFLPA somehow acquires the first round rights... so that next year, 64 players get first round salaries.

For the Colts first round, CB is fine with me, OLB works fine, WR too, maybe DL. Even OL, which I really expected until the FA signings, they may still look for a guard with the first round being too high and third round being too late--maybe a trade down to get a couple second-rounders... IF anybody actually wants their late 1st round pick. The few positions they don't need a body are QB, TE, ILB, and P.

Bobman...I am truly flabbergasted by your comment.

Our LBs got pancaked last year more than IHOP.

The next time Conner fights off a 1 vs. 1 block and makes a tackle will be his first.

Our d-line wasn't good at all...but if you got by them...it was an almost guaranteed free pass to a +10 yard jaunt after you hit the 2nd level.

If you look at the starting 11 on D...Conner is by far the worst player, then who ever they stick in Freeney's spot (Westerman),then Butler and then Bethea (who I think is historically way overrated).

If Brown is available, he's better than Westerman on day one of training camp. I also like Jones out of UCLA over Rhodes. He can play in multiple fronts and would help our paper thin depth on the line.

I just hope Castanzo gets his head out of his ass this year...he has never lived up to expectations in my mind.

I'm with you... it always baffles me how every year there are a few guys who shoot up the lists because they looked particularly good at the combine, etc. and everybody has to try and come up with explanations as to why they could look so good there while they hadn't really been all that great in the actual games they'd played in.

Even successful coaches and organizations have moments where they believe they can take a kid who's a superior athlete and coach him into a player. It works sometimes, but fails more often.

StL picking Lacy and then Sylvester Williams in the 1st round is teh lulz. OL, S, WR, and OLB are far greater needs with far better available players for those positions available in the 1st.

Yeah I quickly scrolled down to see the Rams taking a RB at 16 and thought right not reading any more of this.

Joe, I have bad news for you; Bigfoot is now sold in four-packs.

Will the Raiders trade up for Godod, or will they wait for him?

by Raiderjoe :: Thu, 04/25/2013 - 12:17am

Will get Pale Ale then. Habebrnt bought Sierra Nevada two months time maybe. So was not aware of new bigfoot packaging.

Raiders will stay where at unless a tema want to trade eigh them. Know Chiefs will make bad pick.

My useless Thursday draft predictions (as I really don't want to do a full mock draft):

1) The top 3 OT's will be gone by the Cards #1 pick (including the Cards pick). Joeckel will be the first pick.
2) No QB will be drafted in the top 20. At least two, and possibly 3, QBs will be picked by the end of the first round - all by teams trading back into the first round.
3) The Packers (the only team I really care about) will draft a lineman or LB if they can't trade down. My guess is either Watson or the highest DL available. If they don't pick a DL in round 1 and he's available, they'll grab that big guy from Estonia in round 2. I really want them to grab Lattimore at the end of round 2, even if they have to redshirt him for a year.
4) No RB will be drafted in the first round. Lacy will be grabbed by the first team that traded out of the first round with an early round 2 pick.
5) The Cowboys will do something stupid before the end of the round one. Not to be outdone, the Redskins will find a way to one-up them.
6) All these mocks will mean nothing by midnight tomorrow.

Well, I think your fifth prediction is pretty spot-on.

As a Cowboys fan, I'm worried his fourth is too.
