MMQB: Dawn of a New Era

PK launches his new site today. Best of luck to him, as well as Andy Benoit and Doug Farrar, who will be part of the staff. (Not to mention friends of the program like Greg Bedard.)

Oh, right, and this spells out PK's training camp tour itinerary and has some thoughts on Hall of Fame week.

Peter King presents "Generic football-only Grantland" by SI (with corporate sponsors!)? Ugh.

If this is an opportunity for Peter King to find things out about football and then tell other people who are not Peter King to write articles about those things, I'm all for it.

Specifically, if it means somebody paying Greg Bedard and Andy Benoit for writing about things that Peter King will then refrain from writing about, I would think that everybody comes out better for it.

Am I the only to notice the likeliness between Garrett and Vince McMahon ?

My theory on Garrett is that Jerry Jones is slowly draining him of his youth, which is why he keeps him around.

I can't bring up the new MMQB site where I work. I've tried IE, Firefox, and Chrome. I'm guessing something on the page is blocked by my work's firewall. I guess if it stops me from being annoyed by PK, I can't be too upset.

Your last point was the key one. It's a feature, not a bug.

I couldn't browse MMQB until I disabled "Display all websites in Compatibility mode" under Tools|Compatibility View Settings.
I think the page has javascript bugs in Compatibility mode.

So is Doug Farrar being hired by SI or MMQB? And does this mean he isn't going to finish the Kaepernick article in his emerging passers sequence? I've been waiting for that one for weeks!

Oh god the comments on this site are already terrible. 2nd and 3rd comments on Benoit's excellent Redskins breakdown start out "Another Redskins hating sportswriter..." and "Lots of inaccurate information and pure hate in this article..."

Well, it's the Internet. Everybody's entitled to his own opinion, and you'll hear it, too!

As for Benoit's article, I am tired of people comparing RG3 to Vick. Vick never had the accuracy that RG3 had as a rookie. At some point, any analysis has to notice that RG3 had a nearly 65% completion rate as a rookie. Vick's rate was 10 points lower as rookie and stayed that bad until he got to Philly. Even then he regressed after one very good season.

RG3 had the 4th highest completion rate in the NFL last season. He also led the NFL in yards/attempt. (By a sizeable margin: 8.13 to Peyton's 7.99.) So Redskins' fans have to scratch their heads when they see writers wondering if RG3 can do anything if he cannot run. One could make the argument that the thread of the running game is what opens up the field for those stellar passing numbers. But to do so would require the writer to at least acknowledge that those numbers exist, and that's something Benoit hasn't done.

Agreed on the Vick-RG3 comparisons: not helpful and it's hard to avoid concluding that it gets done primarily because of race.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised at Benoit's article here given what he said in his State of the Team column for the Skins on FO. But it's a little heavy on FUD for my tastes. Apply the same kind of pessimism to any other team and they'll come out looking almost as bad, or worse.

I tuned out RG3/Vick comparisons before the former even took an NFL snap because, well, dogs.

Other than the RG3 injury, everything that's happened since then has only reinforced that tune-out.

Don't complain, justanothersteve, count your blessings. MMQB goes from an intimate read to a corporate bloat. I'm surprised there weren't popups for Alagash white beer. It won't work, Peter King, trying to be all things to all readers.

by justanothersteve :: Mon, 07/22/2013 - 7:30pm

You were correct, sir. Even for PK, that column was just gawdawful. So bad, my browser spellchecker didn't even flag the spelling of gawdawful.

I don't get why MMQB requires its own site. PK's strength is his access to sources and getting comments that aren't shared with lots of other outlets. And it's not likely those sources will share things with PK's staff just because they happen to work for PK.

And I see no mention of Andy Benoit or Doug Farrar. There is a "senior writer" and two "staff writers" with bios on the site and none of those people are Andy or Doug. Either PK is going to have a huge staff or we're talking positions so entry-level we might not even see bylines for them.

by Andreas Shepard :: Mon, 07/22/2013 - 12:21pm

Benoit is a "contributor", as opposed to a staff writer - scroll down to the next paragraph (or click on the "Our Team" tab)

No mention of Farrar though...

A football-only site for SI makes sense, but odd execution here. While the title works for a column written every Monday, it makes zero sense for a website that is promising ongoing and continually coverage. And the website design is horrible. Huge graphics make you scroll forever, even on the home page. No real organization to speak of. Not a pleasant experience for the visitor. Even the intro video chooses style over substance as you wait 15 seconds looking at a pointless shot of goal posts before any narration by Peter King.

I'm sure they're "leveraging the brand". As companies like Time Warner try to navigate through the changing media marketplace, they're going to try to bring existing audiences to the new sites they build. (See also Nate Silver going to ESPN/Disney.)

No doubt the interface will improve over time.

Maybe it's meant to be a metaphor, referencing the connotation some people have with the term "Monday Morning Quarterbacking", implying that you can now get that same obnoxious pseudo-informed second-guessing any time of the week.

I'm an RSS guy, but I cannot find the RSS link for Peter's new site like he had at his old site.

I don't see how it's a bad thing, more NFL content. More ex-FO writers colonising the football world. It has to be a plus for the FO commentariat.

Makes me proud of F.O. There are probably better statisticians out there than Schatz, but no one has created a community the way he has, so many of whom have gone on to have careers in their own right: Barnwell, Farrar, Tanier, Benoit, Michael David Smith, Levin, etc. etc. It's like he has his own "coaching tree."

Yo, Raiderjoe: Zelma (not Zelda) doesn't sound as if English is her first language. We know it's not yours either, but don't make things more difficult for her by lapsing into Estonian.

by Raiderjoe :: Thu, 07/25/2013 - 12:41pm

Estonian? No. Was writing in ebglish. Just hit some wrong keys and mavue didn't whos up right.

Also cut off owne message. Menat to say would look at Peter Long's site after watching The Wire . which did that (watching the Wire) but then did not go to Peyer's new site yet. Saw ad/photo thong for site in Sports Illustarted last week issue with Pirates and Sharknado on cover.
