NFL Week 10: Mike Tanier's Previews and Score Predictions

Hey folks! I am back after a week of flying across the country and not being able to easily update stuff. Look for a cool insidery feature from me at Bleacher Report in the weeks to come. Until then: the usual previews, including Part II of Peyton Manning's novella.

Andrew Luck Out 2-6 Weeks with Lacerated Kidney

Breaking and unexpected injury news. Andrew Luck will miss 2-6 weeks with a laceration in one of his kidneys as well as a partial tear of an abdominal muscle. It's not quite as bad for the Colts as you might imagine. They have a bye this week, and Matt Hasselbeck is still a reasonable backup at the age of 40. I assume Hasselbeck faces Atlanta in Week 11 -- the Falcons schedule gets EVEN MORE RIDICULOUSLY EASY with this injury -- and probably Tampa Bay in Week 12. Perhaps Luck can be back in time for Week 13 at Pittsburgh?

Are NFL Officials Biased With Their Ball Placement?

This is a fun little discovery by a British statistician called Joey Faulkner. In looking at how many NFL plays were run from each yard line, he noticed a pretty gradual curve, with a massive spike at the 20 -- which isn't surprising, since so many drives start there after touchbacks. However, he also noticed smaller spikes at the 30, 40, 50, the other 40, et cetera, all over the field more or less between the 10s. His hypothesis: NFL referees, like all humans, have a natural tendency to spot the ball right on the 10-yard lines when they end up anywhere near that general vicinity.

Lions Fire Martin Mayhew, Tom Lewand

Big changes in Detroit, where the Lions have fired team president Tom Lewand and GM Martin Mayhew. Apparently there's going to be some major overturn throughout the front office...

Understanding the Broncos' Offense

Hat tip to reader "TimK" for this one. It's a couple of weeks old, but still relevant for Denver, and really for any other team undergoing a major change in coaching and/or personnel.

49ers Bench Kaepernick for Gabbert

Alternate headline: "49ers Bench Kaepernick For Worst Quarterback Of The DVOA Era."

Look, things in San Francisco are clearly going badly. Colin Kaepernick is last among starting quarterbacks in passing DYAR, and only Ryan Mallett is worse by DVOA. (And given that Mallett is currently unemployed, he probably won't qualify for these tables in a few weeks.) So it's understandable that the 49ers would consider a quarterback switch.

Colts Fire Pep Hamilton

Chuck Pagano entered the season on the hot seat, and then the Colts to a 3-5 start. The offense is 20th in points scored and next to last in turnovers, and when the DVOA ratings come out later today, the Colts will be 21st in total offense, 22nd passing and 18th rushing. This despite the offseason attempts to surround Andrew Luck with as many weapons as possible.

Titans Fire Ken Whisenhunt

The Titans hired Ken Whisenhunt to take over a team that went 7-9 in 2013. He's gone 3-20 since. But when you fire a guy after less than two years... I've got to wonder if there's more of a story going on behind the scenes here than just "Tennessee isn't winning games." Mike Mularkey takes over as interim coach.
