SITE NEWS: Spam Filter Changes

We've made some changes in our spam filter this week that we hope will make it easier to comment while cutting down on spam.

First of all, we've banned the character string "href" in order to block all embedded links. This means that if you want to paste a link, you will need to just paste the link text in your comment, starting with "http." However, it's pretty clear that the great majority of embedded links are spam posts, so this should definitely help.

In addition, we've unblocked the character string "ugg." We thought we were only blocking the word "ugg" (i.e. spam for ugg boots) but it turns out that we were blocking the character string itself, which meant the spam filter was blocking any comment with the word "suggests." This should lead to a lot fewer problems with reader comments.

Thanks for your patience on this stuff.

Funny about the "ugg." I've had a few times where I actually tried to figure out what the spam filter didn't like but had no luck at all. I might have been saying "suggests".

You wouldn't think it, but it's surprising the number of words that have "ugg" in them. Luggage. Rugged. Nugget. Muggy. Struggle. Tugged. Unplugged. Treehugger. Buggery. I think I should quit now.

Not to mention a former defensive player of the year and Super Bowl champion.

Packers fans don't like to mention him.

I had to google it. That's hysterical. I had never heard of that before.

I was just talking about Tom Brady's footwear a lot. Makes sense now that I was getting blocked.

Ah yes, those snuggly stuffed animal slippers....

Is the word "boots" blocked too? That would explain why I always get tripped up.

Excellent news! And believe me, as a Dolphins fan, it's nice to get ANY good news this week!

(Ironically, I am now filling out the Captcha because the spam filter thinks this is spam...)

I applaud any and all spam filter reform

Sometimes I feel like it doesn't matter what I type, it always thinks it's spam.
It's like he... knows...

and yes... above comment alerted the spam filter.

So, are you guys still planning on doing content management system upgrades at some point? Thought I remembered you mentioning that.

Didn't get it done by start of season, so it's going to happen right after the season.

Can you block by regular expression? That would make it easy to differentiate between "ugg" and words containing "ugg" such as "suggests."

Even just blocking " ugg " (the five character string with leading and trailing whitespace) would be fine for their purposes. Heck, you probably just need to include the leading whitespace character.

Bugger the ref! That pass wasn't juggled,
The receiver was mugged on that play!
A review--I suggest--will show holding at best,
At worst, pure thuggery plain as day!
But the coach is just shrugging, no headset unplugging,
No red flag to protest the call;
Won't risk a time-out? The sluggard! The lout!
Not skullduggery, just Tampa Football.

Can we block "webb"?

25
by tuluse :: Thu, 11/07/2013 - 5:49pm

They could block it from the site, but they can't block the knowledge you posses of the grand anti-webb conspiracy. There's no coming back from taking the blue pill.

Nobody can block Webb.

It's very easy to find out any topic on web as compared to books, as I found this article at this site.
