We've made some changes in our spam filter this week that we hope will make it easier to comment while cutting down on spam.
First of all, we've banned the character string "href" in order to block all embedded links. This means that if you want to paste a link, you will need to just paste the link text in your comment, starting with "http." However, it's pretty clear that the great majority of embedded links are spam posts, so this should definitely help.
In addition, we've unblocked the character string "ugg." We thought we were only blocking the word "ugg" (i.e. spam for ugg boots) but it turns out that we were blocking the character string itself, which meant the spam filter was blocking any comment with the word "suggests." This should lead to a lot fewer problems with reader comments.
Thanks for your patience on this stuff.
