2014 NFL Schedule Announced

Hey kids! Schedule! Click the link above to go to the NFL.com page with the full 2014 schedule, and enjoy discussing it below.

Scott Kacsmar also wrote a story for ESPN Insider on which teams are helped and hurt by schedule this year compared to last year's schedule strength. It's based not on 2013 win-loss percentage, but on a formula that uses 2013 DVOA, regresses towards the mean, and then makes some small adjustments for injuries and free-agent movement. Life gets harder for the Bears, Chiefs, and 49ers, but it gets easier for the Bucs, Texans, and New York Giants.

I remember hearing how the NFL was going to give CBS some good games for TNF, well that seems to not really be the case, right?

They're all divisional matchups, but none seem all that exciting. Steelers @ Ravens will be its traditional 3-point game, and Jets @ Patriots could be interesting, and the final one of Chargers @ Broncos should be fun, but if I'm CBS I'm pissed that arguably the best matchup on TNF is the first solely on NFL Network in Saints @ Panthers.

SNF is stacked as always.

The strangest quirk in this year's schedule to me is that all three Thanksgiving games only involve NFC teams. The Lions game should have been against an AFC team which is why it's on CBS.

Tradition be damned, I will take an interesting divisional matchup over DET or DAL vs. some random, bad AFC team (for some reason in my memory it's always the Dolphins) any day. This T'giving slate is fantastic; all three games are interesting matchups and could have playoff implications.

This year there is "cross-flexing" where CBS games can be given to Fox and vice-versa. With the proviso that each network has to receive as many cross-flexed games that it loses.

Yup, which is also why BUF @ DET in Week 5 in on FOX.

I believe the rest of the cross-flexing games aren't announced ahead of time, but done solely to push bad late-game matchups and optimize the 4:15PM Window.

"Cross-flexing", is that where the male announcers for Fox and CBS take turns wearing dresses and lipstick?

Thanks a lot. I just got an image of Dan Dierdorf in drag.

I may be permanently scarred. I'll tell my shrink to send the bill to you.

Eeuw! That would be hideous. Fortunately Dan retired. Uhm...he did didn't he? Puleeze!

Aikman and Buck in drag would be just as bad...

It will also be interesting to see ESPN get a Wild Card game and NBC get a Divisional Game.

Other than the divisional game NBC gets alternating between CBS and FOX each year, I have questions.

First, what timeslots do ESPN and NBC get for their new playoff games. My guess is ESPN will get the late-Saturday game (or maybe late-Sunday), and NBC gets the late-Saturday Divisional game.

Then, do ESPN and NBC have to air games from both conferences on Wild Card Weekend? My guess is yes, they have to air one from each since one of FOX or CBS's Divisional Games is getting stripped away.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see a more diverse Playoff broadcast schedule. No Mike Mayock, but also once every two years no Greg Gumbel, and the other no whatever-FOX-decides-is-their-#2-team.

Sucks for those of us who refuse to pay extra for ESPN...

Game I will look forward to all year: Bears-Vikings in the season finale, outside in Minneapolis on December 28.
