Black Monday Late Addition: Mike Munchak Fired

The Titans took their sweet time, I guess, but today they fired head coach Mike Munchak. Munchak had been with the organization as a player or coach since 1982, so in that way it's a pretty big move for the Titans. On the other hand, given their record the last couple years and the fact that Munchak's run-first strategies were stuck somewhere in 1976, not such a surprising move.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix Tennessee? They seem like a team that doesn't have any particularly glaring weaknesses but also doesn't anything resembling an actual strength. Do you just try to grab the best players available and hope that one of them is a superstar?

Edit: Why is this comment triggering the spam filter? And more importantly, why am I not getting any chance to prove it isn't spam unless I add this comment?

Being in the AFC South is a good start.

With Luck and Bridgewater? Hmm.

I wondered this before last year's draft too. Back then they seemed a bit like the Chiefs, better on paper than they performed, or at least as you say, not many glaring holes. Coaching change worked for the Chiefs, maybe it will for the Titans as well.

Too early to tell at this point. No superstars means no huge contracts to deal with (excepting Chris Johnson, who should get cut soon), so they've got some room to work with. I think they treat next year as a mini-rebuilding year, look at developing some linebackers and OL/DL depth, and see how Locker does. Not counting his rookie year where he came off the bench some, he's played about 1 full season of games in the last 2 due to injuries. I think next year is his "prove it" year, or they draft a replacement in 2015.

Get a good QB and a good coach. I don't think Locker is the answer, so getting even above-average at both of those positions should allow for a significant step forward.

Send 'em back to Houston, merge them with the Texans, and call them the "Oilers"?

Probably because they forgot he was the head coach.

They have a lot of company. I think most of America forgot who was coaching the Titans.

Most of America forgot the Titans.

But they will come back to life with better ownership.

note; I hate spam but this is getting silly.

"note; I hate spam but this is getting silly."

Probation for new accounts, fine. Always checking anonymous posts, fine. But if you've had your account for years and have never spammed anything--super duper hyper ultra hella annoying.

No silly is complaining about a spam filter when you have chosen an unverified username containing the words 'big' and 'Wood'.

This might be a valid argument if those of us with verified usernames weren't also constantly subjected to the spam filter.

There was a thread to post in where Aaron would remove the spam filter. You should email him about it.

I think it eliminated the captcha, not the spam filter.

But be very specific in your e-mail. Otherwise Aaron won't read it. Even though he reads these threads. And is perfectly capable to running the post through his Bayesian filter to figure out why it's hitting on -- those give relative weights and everything!

The Titans are the NFL's mystery franchise. No other team has been out of the national spotlight for so long.

Buffalo?

Buffalo and Cleveland are in the same category in that they're both "famous" for sustained futility. Tennessee's futility is of relatively short duration, so it's barely a blip on anybody's radar. If they remain out of the playoffs for the next five years, then they'll approach Cleveland/Buffalo/Detroit infamy.

The Titans were pretty relevant quite recently. They made the playoffs in '08, and were no.1 seed in the AFC in '09. They were bounced in their first game both times, but several franchises have experienced recent runs of futility way worse than that.

Perhaps they've avoided the spotlight recently by being consistently mediocre/poor, rather than downright awful.

"Perhaps they've avoided the spotlight recently by being consistently mediocre/poor, rather than downright awful."

Well it's that combined with being in a small market. Dallas has been mediocre for 4 years in a row, but they're always on the front page (so to speak).

My perception during those two years was that they were quite under the radar compared to their performance, and the #1 divisional loss wasn't treated as an upset. Well, it was the years of Patriots-Colts-Steelers-Chargers.
