I never quite know at what point we should be posting news of the "sources report" variety. I usually prefer for a trade or retirement or cut to actually be announced. But at this point there have been enough reports that Calvin Johnson is going to retire that I think we can consider this one on the up-and-up. Johnson is still playing at a high level -- he was eighth in DYAR and 16th in DVOA among wide receivers this year -- and the Lions are going to miss him significantly on the field.

The Chargers announced today they will play the 2016 NFL season in San Diego, but their future in the city beyond that is very much in jeopardy.

The NFL has announced its all-time Super Bowl 50 Golden Team, "celebrating the best overall career performances in the Super Bowl." As you would expect, the roster is dominated by Steelers -- seven Pittsburgh players made the list, followed by five Cowboys, four 49ers, three Raiders, and three Packers. (Though that tally gets complicated by Deion Sanders and Charles Haley, each of whom played in a Super Bowl with both Dallas and San Francisco. I just counted one as a 49er, one as a Cowboy.) Only one Patriot makes the list: kicker Adam Vinatieri.

Benjamin Morris at 538.com points out that in all the madness of Andy Reid's clock mutilation and Aaron Rodgers' Hails of Mary, few noticed that both the Chiefs and Packers kicked extra points when basic math and league-wide averages said they should have gone for two. This is actually a few days old, but hey, Morris used my Tweet, so it's only fair to mention his piece here.

Our old pal Mike Tanier notes that even in victory, the Patriots, Cardinals, Panthers, and Broncos showed serious flaws in their game, then explores how those flaws might lead to success or victory on championship Sunday.

The Giants and Ravens set a record in Super Bowl XXXV with 21 total punts. That record may well be in jeopardy. But in this battle of top defenses, Carolina's superior and more flexible offense gives the Panthers the edge.
