The NFL has suspended Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker for four games for violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy.
ESPN's Adam Schefter has reported that Welker tested positive for the use of amphetamines.
NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal reports that Welker's appeal was heard two weeks ago.

Hey kids, B.S. Report! Bill Simmons and I talk about the upcoming season, including our picks for the top teams competing for the Super Bowl, the most likely unexpected Super Bowl contender (we're both on San Diego), and the most likely team to go through a "hell season" (Bill says San Francisco, I say Arizona).

It's time for the TENTH ANNUAL Football Outsiders Open Loser League competition. Yes, tenth. Kind of nutty. And we haven't changed the rules at all in all that time. Even though we probably should. We're lazy that way. Come pick your roster of bad (but not bad enough to get benched) players for the first half of 2014, with a shot at winning free fantasy projections for 2015. Let's see how many of you can do this without Trent Richardson on your team.

Hello old friends!
As you may have heard, there was a massive shakeup/purge at Sports on Earth back on August 4th. I was part of a skeleton crew retained by Major League Baseball Advanced Media after USA Today pulled out of our venture, but while I was thrilled to be given the chance to keep working, I fit in to the new reality about as well as a Yankees quarterback. It was obviously in my best interests to move on.

DeVante Parker knows the vertical game, but must learn to sell it.

Well, that was a long wait. The Patriots have dealt Ryan Mallett to Houston for a sixth-round pick. I still think grabbing Mallett in the third round of the 2011 draft was a good gamble, it was just a gamble that didn't work out as hoped. Better a sixth-round pick than nothing, I suppose. Houston now has to decide if they want to try to extend Mallett, or do they just wait to see if he ends up playing later this year and how he does.

The NFL has suspended San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith for nine games for violating the league's personal-conduct policy.
Smith was sentenced in July to 11 days of work release in a Santa Clara County (Calif.) court after his September 2013 arrest for drunken driving. It was his second such arrest since entering the NFL in 2011. Also, Smith had three felony gun charges knocked down to misdemeanors.

While Saturday won't give us an answer to which is the best one-loss team, it is still a big week for conference races across the country.
