SITE NEWS: Seeking 1987 Videotapes

Time for one of our occasional calls looking for videotapes of old games so we can complete past seasons of play-by-play and do DVOA/DYAR ratings. We're done transcribing 1988 and we'll be working on that spreadsheet over the offseason, which means the transcription project has moved to 1987. The NFL does not have gamebooks for the games listed below. We've tried to contact the teams themselves. We've checked for these games on a lot of different tape trading sites, with either no luck finding the games or no luck getting a response. Now we're going to you, the readers. If any of you are part of the tape-trading community, perhaps you can help us find these games.

  • WAS at ATL, Week 2, 9/20/87 - our video here is missing the first five drives of the game
  • TB at DET, Week 4, 10/4/87 - we have a gamebook here but the first quarter is illegible
  • CIN at ATL, Week 10, 11/15/87
  • LARD at SD, Week 10, 11/15/87 - our gamebook is missing the second quarter
  • STLC at ATL, Week 12, 11/29/87 - second and third quarters are illegible, as gamebook scan over-exposed left side of page to light
  • MIN at DET Week 15, 12/20/87 - second quarter of gamebook is illegible
  • DET at ATL, Week 16, 12/27/87

If you can help us out, let us know in the comments or e-mail us at info-at-footballoutsiders.com.

For those curious, the plan is to do DVOA/DYAR based on a 12-game season without the three strike games, and then produce separate DVOA ratings for that three-game period for curiosity's sake.

I can't help, but maybe O'Shaughnessy, Cairo, Gutman or Thursby have the missing Falcon tapes.

How far back do you think you'll be able to go? I'm amazed you've made it this far, and I hope it somehow never ends.

LARD is a great abbreviation for a team.
