20 Plays Every NFL Coach Should Steal

Great X & O piece today by Matt Bowen, breaking down 20 plays run by NFL teams that other NFL teams should probably steal. Obviously, not every team is going to run the Titans' or Patriots' QB sweep, but there's a lot of good stuff in here. I'm particularly fond of the Seahawks' 3 Mable to deal with trips.

Was just coming here to post this. This is tremendous. Only thing missing would be video examples of each play, but at least Bowen often gives examples so you can look up the clips yourself.

Really hoping for no Patriots QB sweeps in 2017!

The list of plays every NFL coach should burn might exceed 20.

You could come up with 20 burnable plays just from any given Rex Ryan Jets season. Their whole offense was poorly-thought-out gimmick plays.

Ah, that's where Bowen went! I had loved his articles on BR, but they suddenly dried up in 2015 training camp. I hadn't realized he was at ESPN. I don't know why more former players don't write X's and O's columns; Bowen's and Muth's stuff is my favorite kind of football writing.

If there is anything more damning about McCarthy's lack of innovation as a coordinator, it's his not even being mentioned in this article. Rodgers is amazing and the Packers have a decent amount of talent around him on offense. But he keeps plugging different players into the same plays. Congrats. He figured out Montgomery was the most effective as the RB on the team. But it's still the same old scheme.

The same is true of Dom Capers defense. Don't get me wrong. They are both still very good coaches. But you can only run the FB into the center of the line on a fake handoff to the RB so many times before it's no longer a surprise. The last creative game plans he had was when he beat the Patriots in 2014 and the Seahawks playoff game the same year. There's a reason it's sometimes called the Not For Long league. That six game win streak to "run the table" wasn't just amazing because it made Rodgers look cognizant. It saved McCarthy's and Capers' jobs.

a lot of those only work because the team in question has very specific complementary personnel. stealing them with a generic roster would backfire catastrophically.
