How NFL Quarterbacks Are Made

Great long piece on MMQB by Robert Klemko, looking at the development and training of the quarterbacks picked in the 2016 draft. A lot of the things are unsurprising-most of them played 7-on-7 football, not just in the fall, virtually all of them worked with specialized QB coaches outside their family and normal high school coaches, family support was key, and, yes, many of those families had money to pay for those specialized coaches-but there's a lot to read and consider in this detailed article.

Proposing A 32-Team NFL Trade

Kenneth Arthur at Sports On Earth has put together the most fun random offseason thought experiment I've seen in a while: Is it possible to put together a trade in which every NFL team gives a player to get a player ... with every team coming out improved when all is said and done?

Visualizing Wide Receiver Routes with Player Tracking Data

Those "next-gen stats" on NFL broadcasts are pretty useless, but there's actually a ton of interesting things you can do with the Zebra data that tracks player movement with chips in each player's shoulder pads. Nik Oza from the Georgetown Sports Analysis club got access to similar data as part of the 2016 MIT Sloan Conference "Hackathon" and shares here some of the things teams will be able to do with this tracking data.

Federal Appeals Court Reinstates Brady Suspension

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled in a 2-1 decision, overturning the previous overturning of Tom Brady's four-game Deflategate suspension. The essential finding here is that in the last CBA, the NFLPA negotiated away any legal rights for players. Roger Goodell's broad discretion under the CBA means he can essentially do anything to any player for any reason at any time.

Josh Norman Now A Free Agent

In surprising news, the Carolina Panthers have rescinded their franchise tag on Josh Norman, meaning that effective immediately the veteran cornerback is free to sign with any team he pleases -- and it seems a sure thing that team won't be the Panthers.

"After a number of conversations with Josh's agent we realized that a long-term deal was not attainable," Carolina general manager Dave Gettleman said. "We have decided to rescind the Franchise Tag freeing Josh to immediately become a UFA. We thank Josh for all his contributions and truly wish him well."

Cleveland Trades No. 2 Pick to Philadelphia

Well, another big trade at the top of the NFL draft. The Cleveland Browns are trading the No. 2 pick in this year's NFL draft to the Philadelphia Eagles for five selections over the next two years.

The Browns get the 2016 first-round pick (No. 8 overall), the Eagles' third-round and fourth-round picks in 2016. They also get the Eagles' 2017 first-round pick and the Eagles' 2018 second-rounder. The Eagles get the No. 2 pick this year and... reports seem to disagree on whether they also get this year's Cleveland fourth-round pick or a conditional 2017 fourth-round pick.

Los Angeles Rams Trade for First Overall Pick

Big news at the top of the NFL draft this morning, as the Los Angeles Rams completed a trade with the Tennessee Titans to acquire the first overall pick. The Rams give up their first-round pick (15), both of their second-round picks (43 and 45), their third-round pick (76), and 2017 first-round and third-round picks. In addition to the #1 pick, the Rams got picks 113 and 177.

Jets Trade for Clady to Replace Ferguson

Step One: D'Brickashaw Ferguson retires. The fourth overall draft pick in 2006, Ferguson was perfectly durable, starting every game for the Jets over the next decade and making the Pro Bowl in 2009, 2010, and 2011.
