Mike Tanier's Monday Morning Digest: Panthers, Cardinals, Jets in Trouble While Falcons Fly

Gotta remember to keep posting these. This week's Digest is a glorified reason to pile on the Jets and complain for the umpteenth time about how boring Ravens football is.

Time to Get Pass Interference Under Control

As Greg Bedard points out here, defensive pass interference penalties are at an all-time high through three weeks. We've already had 60 DPI calls through 48 games. If DPI was a player, he would be the No. 2 receiver on the Green Bay Packers. So, what's the solution? Bedard suggests reinforcing the idea of "uncatchable" passes, making DPI reviewable, and emphasizing the word "significantly" in the phrase "significantly hinders."

J.J. Watt Re-Injures Back, Placed on IR

Originally reported by Ian Rapaport of NFL.com: "Texans star DL J.J. Watt has re-injured his back and is expected to be out for an extended period of time. Could be the season." Obviously there are more details to come, but this is a pretty big deal. It's hard to think of a non-quarterback who impacts a game when healthy more than Watt. He clearly hasn't been healthy this year, and a setback is the worst news Houston could get, especially if he's done for the season.

LSU Fires Les Miles

The Les Miles era is over after 12 seasons in Baton Rouge. Miles survived an attempted coup late in 2015 but an underwhelming 2-2 start this year for a team with legitimate preseason playoff aspirations was enough evidence for LSU to pull the plug.

Brissett Tears Thumb Ligament, Pats May Be Down to 4th QB

OK, this is kind of nuts. Patriots quarterback Jacoby Brissett apparently tore a ligament in his right thumb during the second half of last night's 27-0 win over Houston, when Vince Wilfork fell on him in the third quarter. There seems to be disagreement among reporters about how bad the injury is, with Mike Petraglia of WEEI reporting that Brissett needs surgery but Ian Rapoport of NFL.com saying the injury may not be bad enough to keep Brissett out in Week 4.

A New Perscription for Post-NFL Pain

Hey gang! Tanier here promoting a story I am particularly proud of.

This is the story of how an ex-NFL player with brain damage got a service dog. And how that player is helping to solve the service dog shortage in America and trying to get dogs to veterans, ex-players and anyone else who needs them.
