Well, that was a long wait. The Patriots have dealt Ryan Mallett to Houston for a sixth-round pick. I still think grabbing Mallett in the third round of the 2011 draft was a good gamble, it was just a gamble that didn't work out as hoped. Better a sixth-round pick than nothing, I suppose. Houston now has to decide if they want to try to extend Mallett, or do they just wait to see if he ends up playing later this year and how he does.

The NFL has suspended San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith for nine games for violating the league's personal-conduct policy.
Smith was sentenced in July to 11 days of work release in a Santa Clara County (Calif.) court after his September 2013 arrest for drunken driving. It was his second such arrest since entering the NFL in 2011. Also, Smith had three felony gun charges knocked down to misdemeanors.

We're so sorry this took so long, but all the FO player pages are now updated with 2013 stats. That includes both offensive and defensive players. All readers can see the last three seasons; FO Premium subscribers can see entire careers. In addition, similarity scores are now updated to reflect last season's performance. So, for example, you can now see that the most similar player to Brandon Marshall's 2013 is Eric Moulds in 2002, and the most similar player to Marshall for 2011-2013 is Roddy White 2009-2011. Most similar is listed for all readers; FO Premium subscribers get a top ten.

Well, that sucks. Sucks for the Browns, and for all of us who like to watch great football players.

Wait, what? The Patriots have a habit of doing this right before the season with aging veterans, don't they? First Lawyer Milloy, then Richard Seymour, now they've dealt 32-year-old Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins to Tampa Bay for tight end Tim Wright (good receiver, can't block) and a pick. Everyone's jumping to conclusions on Twitter, but it's hard to judge the trade until we know what the pick is. But still... it feels like the Pats are always playing fifth dimensional chess. Is Mankins in decline? Is this about the cap space for a Darrelle Revis extension?

Nebraska runner Ameer Abdullah’s 43-yard touchdown vs. Illinois offers a sound example of the difficulties of judging speed without a stopwatch, but why it’s still as important as the 40-time.

The Wildcats receiver isn't the best athlete you'll ever see, but Matt Waldman says he could be an effective pro with small improvements in his technique.
