In this week's column for NBC Sports, I take a look at Denver's defense, the force behind their 2-0 start. Tidbit from the piece: the best pass defense DVOA in Week 1 was the Broncos against the Ravens. The best pass defense DVOA in Week 2 was the Broncos against the Chiefs. I did not take the time to look up the last team had the best pass defense DVOA two weeks in a row, but I'm guessing it's been a while.

Trey Causey wants to know why football seems to be the one sport -- maybe the one industry -- where data analytics is not having any real impact. He makes some good points. How many times do we need to make the same arguments about fourth-down strategy? On the other hand, I do think analytics are having some under-the-radar impact in front-office decisions. Just because some front offices make bad decisions to trade up in the draft doesn't mean analytics isn't taking hold in other front offices. But yes, it sure seems ridiculous that we're still arguing over obvious things and low-hanging fruit.

In a not ridiculous move, the Dallas Cowboys traded for quarterback Matt Cassel today, dealing a 2017 fifth-round pick to Buffalo for Cassel and a 2017 seventh-round pick. (Because of previous trades, the Cowboys didn't have a 2016 pick past the fourth round to offer in a deal.) Cassel offers good insurance in case Brandon Weeden is terrible as the new Dallas starter, although it's expensive insurance because Cassel has a $2 million contract. Yes, Cassel is mediocre at best, but that mediocrity may be better than Brandon Weeden's best.

More bad news about the toll playing football takes on the human brain: "A total of 87 out of 91 former NFL players have tested positive for the brain disease at the center of the debate over concussions in football, according to new figures from the nation’s largest brain bank focused on the study of traumatic head injury."

The mood here in the Greater Philly area is ... not good. And they haven't even closed the whole region down for the Pope yet.

Cincinnati returns to the No. 1 spot in our DVOA ratings, with Kansas City an even more surprising No. 1 in weighted DVOA. Plus, decline in Green Bay and Arizona isn't as horrible as total collapse in Philadelphia.
