Nothing like a bunch of crotchety old guys from the '72 Dolphins -- the last team to go undefeated -- waiting for the remaining unbeaten teams to fall so they can bust out the bubbly. If nothing else, I guess it helps take their minds off the '06 Dolphins.

It's not everyday a second-year player gets a contract extension. After signing as the Eagles' first-round pick in 2005 (including $3.8 million in guaranteed money), defensive tackle Mike Patterson inks a seven-year, $32 million extension with $9 million guaranteed. This is a little better than Maurice Clarett's contract with the Broncos.

I've given Kellen Winslow a lot of gruff for all that "I'm a soldja!" stuff, but it turns out he's a really good tight end too. This week the Browns face the Chargers and predictably, one of the subplots is the Antonio Gates - Kellen Winslow matchup (as much as you can have a matchup between two players sharing a position). Currently, Winslow ranks 4th in TE DPAR and Gates ranks 8th. Not too shabby for a guy who missed almost two seasons due to various injuries. (free registration/bugmenot required)

Not really a surprise, but still worth mentioning ... Martin, one of the most prolific running backs in NFL history, will officially announce the end of his 2006 season today. He has been on the Physically Unable to Perform list since August. Many of his teammates believe this to be the inevitable prelude to retirement - his right knee is "bone-on-bone", according to one unnamed player. The 2004 NFL rushing champ and one of Bill Parcells' all-time favorite players, Martin leaves a great legacy as a player and person. He also awaits (one would think) a no-brainer first-ballot HOF nomination.

I have a question, and I ask this question out of serious curiosity, not a desire to pump my own ego (or the collective ego of Football Outsiders). If you look at the current Las Vegas odds, Pittsburgh is actually favored to beat Denver on Sunday. The current line is somewhere between -2.0 and -3.0 depending on where you look. This just blows me away.

The NFL gets to show off four of their greatest quarterbacks this week. Has this fearsome foursome ever been topped? Your Scramble team remembers conference championships of yore, and take a trip back to their childhoods to try and find an answer.
