Someone mentioned Bill Simmons' playoff betting guide in the Forbes article discussion, and what do you know? The Sports Guy has updated his guide for the 2004 season. This is always one of my favorite Simmons columns.

More reviews of the major coaching decisions from our friend William Krasker. Issues analyzed this time include the Jets going for two with a 26-21 lead in St. Louis, Buffalo's field goal from the Pittsburgh 11-yard line leading 17-16, and a couple events from the San Diego-Indianapolis tilt. Plus, when is a Hail Mary better than a last-second field goal try?

The real question here is why they hired Erickson in the first place. If you're going to fire a coach, Steve Mariucci, who has taken your team to the playoffs, shouldn't you be sure you've got someone better lined up? I think Donahue should be gone, too. It's his job to acquire talent, and the 49ers are lacking.

The new Colts' stadium has fans feeling good right now, but will that last if the team stops winning? Some bad signs: Immediately after the mayor announced his plan, the often-quoted price tag of $500 million grew to $687.5 million. Radley Balko writes, "In order for the city of Indianapolis to build a new stadium for the Colts, it will need to tear down the RCA Dome. That will require the city to break the lease it signed with the Colts on the dome.

Blogger "3martini" proves that in the NFL, there's no accounting for lack of taste. Too bad he didn't also include "alternate" uniforms, or else this list could have been 25 teams long. The Bengals, of course, are number one. My god, their new uniforms this season are hideous. (Hat tip: Off Wing Opinion)

Here's a novel idea, instead of chasing free agents every offseason, the Texans instead choose to build their team through the draft. Of course Redskins owner Dan Snyder immediately comes to mind as someone who looks to rebuild his team every year through free agency, but he might be wise to heed the words of Texans GM Charley Casserly, "You can't continually spend in free agency every year. If you're doing that, it's a sign that you haven't been drafting or signing the right guys." Exhibit A: Mark Brunell.

If your team didn't make the playoffs, take heart because it's NFL Players Week on "Wheel of Fortune" and your favorite player (or at least the player you'd most like to see standing next to Pat Sajak trying to solve a puzzle) just might be one of the contestants. I had the great pleasure of watching Hines Ward, Jevon Kearse and Torry Holt (each partnered with a hometown fan) battle it out yesterday, and things look to get really exciting later in the week.

Richard Sandomir of the New York Times criticizes the CBS No. 2 announcing team of Dick Enberg and Dan Dierdorf, and I'm with him all the way. I cringe at the thought of these guys doing a divisional playoff game. Sandomir writes:

TMQ is here with his regular season wrap-up, featuring the usual look at great plays and bad plays, and maybe the all-time worst Buffalo chicken-out punt. Gregg also shares my bad feeling about Philadelphia's recent slide, backups or no backups.

Well, this certainly isn't a surprise, especially when you consider that the Ravens never finished higher than 14th in total offense and have finished in the bottom half of the league five times (this year they were 31st). Adding insult to injury, Billick took over the play-calling duties the last few weeks, but the head coach wants to make it clear to anyone who'll listen that Cavanaugh wasn't fired -- apparently it was "mutual." Whatever the case, Jim Fassel, Ron Turner and Scott Linehan are already being mentioned as potential candidates to replace Cavanaugh.
