When Parcells Became Ordinary

David Leonhardt of the New York Times asks: What if it was Bill Belichick all along? In his six seasons without Belichick, in New England and Dallas, Bill Parcells is 44-47 with no playoff victories. (Free registration or bugmenot required.)

Congressman Says BCS "Deeply Flawed"

Texas Congressman Joe Barton is calling for a Congressional hearing to address the "deeply flawed" Bowl Championship Series system. I'm glad our representatives are spending their time investigating the important issues that are facing our country. Next month, look for a Georgia Congressman to call for a hearing to investigate why the Falcons are so low in the FoxSports.com power rankings.

SI to Name Tom Brady Sportsman of the Year

Scroll down. Way down. Brady is the first NFL-associated Sportsman of the Year since Don Shula in 1993 and the first NFL player since Joe Montana in 1990. For you fans of "East Coast Bias," this is the second straight Boston-related choice. For you fans of the Buffalo Bills, enjoy your cover jinx-related upset in Week 14.

Mailing in NFL's Week 13

Excellent Simmons this week, lots of good jokes, good observations, and very little Boston-centeric bias that will piss off those of you who root for the other 31 teams. He's dead on about those stupid "fantasy stats" scrolls that tell you which lame receiver has one catch for six yards. Whoopee. Bill's Bears bandwagon takes other step this week, as he suggests that they could even make it to the Super Bowl. It sounds ridiculous, but I was actually thinking about something this morning.

Collinsworth and Madden Would Unite Analytic Minds

Yeah, I'm not so sure Chris Collinsworth is the guy I want working with John Madden next year. For sheer comedic reasons, I'd love to see either David Brent or Buck Laughlin in the booth. Or maybe even Stuart Scott. Has anybody else noticed the pained, puzzled expression Madden gets every time he has to talk to Scott during Monday Night Countdown? Multiply that by 100 and you've Sunday night fireworks. (free registration/bugmenot required)

Steelers Official Claims Colts use Mikes to Enhance Crowd Noise

This makes perfect sense. The Steelers lost, in part, because the Colts were piping crowd noise through the PA system when Pittsburgh had the ball. The other part of why the Steelers lost is because they got manhandled by the Colts. And Tommy Maddox. When in doubt, always blame Tommy Maddox.

ESPN Suspends Irvin One Week

If you're a Nielsen household, please, I beg you: Watch NFL Countdown on Sunday. Maybe if the ratings go up without him, the ESPN brass will get rid of Michael Irvin for good.

Beisel Rants to Less-Than-Rave Reviews

This is nowhere near Code Red: Ryan Leaf Meltdown Status, but it does give you some indication of how playing in a big media market is a little different than say, Kansas City. You'd think Beisel would've covered that (expletive) in his (expletive) mass communications classes at (expletive) Kansas State.

Festivus for the Rest of Us

Brian Bassett of the Jets Blog is celebrating Festivus. As you all know, a big part of Festivus is the "Airing of Grievances," and first on the list is Jets GM Terry Bradway. Fans of other teams should also feel free to air their grievances here. And remember, traditionally, Festivus is not over until the head of the household is wrestled to the floor and "pinned".
