ESPN AGS: Packers over Cowboys

Last week's Any Given Sunday talked about how bad the Packers' offensive line was. Then they went out and beat the Cowboys. So what about the other half of the team? This week's Any Given Sunday talks about how their defense (top-ranked in DVOA) could drag that awful offensive line into the playoffs anyway.

This was the first game where I thought the Packers defense looked good against an offense with non-trivial talent. Does this mean that the Vikings offense is great? It should be noted that the Packers' defensive success is more dependent, relative to other good defenses, on officiating which is reluctant to throw flags. If Ron Winters' crew (a gang I hate to watch) called every Packers game, they might be yielding 30 points a game.

Also, as I mentioned yesterday, if you want to get an idea regarding the importance of fumble luck, imagine the outcome to Packers/Cowboys with the fumble recoveries reversed. The Packers likely lose, despite clearly outplaying the Cowboys.

Does this mean that the Vikings offense is great?

As of last week the Vikings have played the 5th best defence twice, the 7th, 9th and 10th (GB, SF, Pitt, Balt). Those ratings will likely go up as those defenses gave up a grand total of 25 points last week.

Will - have you noticed teams starting to defend the pass more against the Vikings yet. Since the middle of Peterson's rookie year there has been 8-9 in the box every play. It seems to me teams are still sticking to that same stack the box game plan and paying dearly for it as Favre plays pitch and catch with his receivers.

It's a pick your poison kind of thing. Play a traditional defence and Peterson will kill you. Stack the box and they rip you with Rice, Harvin, Shiancoe and Berrian.

I hope there is extensive discussion on the suspension of holding rules for large parts of this game.

Then they went out and beat the cowboys?
By a score of 17 to 7?
The green bay DEFENSE won that game. and offence gave up 4 sacks.
Same mistake that people make when adding up a qb's wins and losses and super bowl wins. Defense plays a role!
