ESPN: Utah Will Contend in the New Pac-10

The Utah Utes are 7-3 against the Pac-10 since 2003. They posted undefeated, BCS bowl-winning seasons in 2004 and 2008. They'll join the new Pac-10 south division, it appears, just as USC will be facing the effects of NCAA sanctions. Brian Fremeau looks into the possibility that Utah may soon be one of the favorites for an annual BCS bowl auto-bid.

If USC hadn't appealed, this might have been a great season for Utah to join (well, aside from the fact you can't make the switch for the upcoming season) ... with USC on probation and Oregon missing its starting QB (with a lesser QB, I doubt they'd have beaten Purdue last season), the Pac-12 would be open for competition.

Even in 2011, I think they should be playing near (or at) the top of their division. USC will certainly be serving their penalties that season (I doubt they'll be reduced and they certainly won't go below a season of probation and reductions), and if there is a contender among Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State, and UCLA, I don't see it. A strong Utah team could well win the Pac-12 South.
