As with recruiting classes and draft picks, we try to determine immediately whether a coaching hire is a good one (Pragmatic! The Athletic Director got his man!) or a bad one (Panic move! They settled!). Florida hired Will Muschamp last night to replace Urban Meyer, and we've seen plenty of extreme analysis in both directions. In the latest ESPN Insider piece, I take a look at past promotions of defensive coordinators to the top gig to see what we can learn. Quantifying coaching changes is difficult-to-impossible, but is there anything about defensive coordinators that makes them more or less likely to succeed?
