What makes the 20-yard line so special? Why does the offense get credit for some red zone scores that should entirely be credited to the defense? Is there a way to incorporate big play potential into our measures of how well offenses finish drives?
For this contribution to the college football preview issue of ESPN the Magazine, I talked with Dana Holgorsen, Frank Beamer, and Dan Mullen, each of whom agreed that the traditional parameters of red zone success are due to be reevaluated. Introducing the Value Drive, a new stat that correlates better with winning percentage than red zone success and has less variability per team from year to year.
