ESPN: Recruiting Versus Results

In a two-part piece for ESPN Insider last week, Brian Fremeau compares recruiting success with on-the-field results to identify the most overachieving and underachieving programs over the last five seasons. Base on a five-year weighted recruiting metric, "more talented" teams win 66 percent of the time versus "less talented" teams. The overachievers and underachievers aren't a particularly surprising bunch.

  • Overachievers including Stanford, Baylor, Boise State, Cincinnati and Oregon State.
  • Underachievers including Michigan, Notre Dame, UCLA, Miami and Florida State.

You would only prepare this list based on tradition. I see Cincinnati as a program that has continually been on the rise since 2005. Look at the pros they have produced; Kevin Huber, Connor Barwin, Brent Celek, Tony Pike, Marty Gilyard, Ben Guidugli.
