ESPN: Caldwell's Limited Statistical Impact

Don't expect Jim Caldwell to dramatically improve the Detroit offense based on a four-game playoff sample in Baltimore and the fact that he got to coach Peyton Manning for a few years.

If Matt Stafford wants to work like a top tier NFL qb, then Caldwell likely will be thought of as a successful hire. If Stafford doesn't, then Caldwell will likely be thought of a bad hire.

I don't disagree with you on this point, but I think the Lions pass defense is a bigger issue, and I don't see what Caldwell brings to improve that.

Teryl Austin is who Caldwell brings. He's really sharp and an an excellent DB coach. I expect him to be a good DC and for the Lions to show immediate improvement with the secondary.

That sounds good to me -- I was hoping he could lure some Ravens defense assistants to Detroit.
He's got his work cut out, too. The Lions spent 4 draft picks on CBs the last two years. They're a pretty raw bunch.

On the other hand, he mentioned Jim Tressel during a press conference. In Michigan. That would be pretty inept from a PR standpoint.

I don't think they really care about PR. Mayhew's not a dumb guy. I'm sure he knew the Caldwell hiring wouldn't go over well with the majority of fans, and be underwhelming to the remainder.

Caldwell might not be the most desired choice, but Tressel is probably the one guy who could compete with Matt Millen as most hated man in Michigan. Besides, he's a sleazeball.

On a positive note, I see they've retained all of the OL and DL coaches and the ST coach. At least Caldwell knows not to mess around with units that performed well.

Yea, this has been very encouraging. So has the Teryl Austin hire. A good staff can compensate for a lot of limitations of the coach.
