ESPN: Week 18 Numbers Crunching

If you liked Numbers Crunching during the regular season, you'll love it for the playoffs, with even more tidbits for each game. Some of this stuff will also appear in tomorrow's expanded playoff previews here on FO.

Aaron -

In the article you state

"Dallas' games this season have featured a lot of long drives, partly because the Cowboys have been strong on kickoffs and weak on kickoff returns."

The Cowboys have switched kickers a few weeks ago to Suisham - who isn't particular good at kickoffs. Does somebody else still do kickoffs for the Cowboys, or how can this switch be taken into account?

David Buehler has been the Cowboys kickoff guy all year.

As Tom stated, Buehler has been the Cowboys kickoff specialist this year. Also the only kicker I've seen that's played on punt coverage. He's more athletic then any kicker I've seen. The Cowboys drafted him in the 5th round. I hated it because kickers aren't usually worth a draft pick, but the dramatic change in opposition starting field position has been huge this year.

It stings to read even more negative statistics about the Green Bay punter, this after finshing dead last in SI's punter rankings a few weeks back. Unfortunately the only person who thinks this guy is worth a damn is the one responsible for the hiring and firing for the team.

That's not the best place to draw the line for the Packers sacks allowed - Rodgers was dropped four times in their ninth game of the year, the home loss to Dallas. So it's 41 sacks in nine games, and nine sacks in seven games since. And this is more Rodgers (and pocket awareness) than the line, though getting Mark Tauscher in there has helped.

This is exactly why I rarely visit footballoutsiders.com anymore. I refuse to pay ESPN for "insider" crap. That is how I ended up at footballoutsiders.com in the first place. Now that I get directed to ESPN's BS all of the time, I use coldhardfootballfacts.com instead. If your writing is good enough, you'll collect money on advertisments. Money grabbing whores! You're trying to expand your audience by moving your information to the site that your readers came from. Trust me, we all were ESPN readers and got tired of their crap. You move to ESPN, you lose the readers that came here to get away from ESPN.
See ya. Feel free to close my account.

Regular articles that are still free:
- Audibles at the Line
- Quick Reads
- DVOA Rankings
- Scramble for the Ball
- Walkthrough
- Cover 3
- FEI Ratings
- Seventh Day Adventure
- One Foot Inbounds

Regular articles that are ESPN Insider-only:
- Number Crunching
- Any Given Sunday
- A preview of the Monday Night Game each week

You don't have to pay for the Insider stuff. In fact, the *best* stuff is still free.

Is it a little odd that there are only 7 comments about an article written yesterday?

Probably because the article in question is behind ESPN's subscriber wall, and very few people can see it. I would never have signed up for ESPN Insider, except that Amazon.com recently ran a special that gave you 1 year of Insider and 1 year of ESPN The Magazine for $5. The magazine blows, but the Insider stuff is actually pretty good. More valuable if you play fantasy football. Don't know if the offer at Amazon still stands, but they're almost always running $5 magazine subscription specials. See if the Insider deal is still up. (Can anyone from FO confirm/deny?)

Re #6: The FO crew are writing the same high caliber of stuff they post here, so it was worth the fin. But no, I woud not pay the regular $6/month or whatever it normally is for an Insider subscription.

I have no problems with FO selling restricted content to ESPN. They're a business like any other, and I think they're one of the few online resources that's worth a few extra bucks. But again, I only signed up because I would *never* have paid full price for Insider, with or without FO.

(Captcha text: "to unfrock." Woo!)

I wouldn't pay even 1 dollar per month for some blow hards at ESPN. The thing that gets me though is the constant attacks at the "main stream media", and then the outsiders more or less become part of the mainstream media and get to hang out with Peter King and Keith Olberman etc. on football night in Amercia and seem star struck.

Dude, read Peter Kings stuff here and 99% of the people are attacking him for what a baffon he is.

The dirty little secret is that ESPN.com doesn't have a lot of talent worth paying for. Quick, who's the NFL guy they have that you *must* read or listen to? Chris Mortensen? Mark Schlereth? Eric Allen? Boomer and TJ? Mike Ditka? Trent Dilfer is okay, not great. Most of their bloggers are flimsy, with the exception of Mike Sando.

The only ESPN Insiders I'd pay for are Keith Law and Buster Olney.

[I love the Captchas. Makes me feel like I'm drinking when I actually haven't been.]
