ESPN Numbers Crunching: Super Bowl XLII

Here we go with the last ESPN stat notebook of the year. I had to cut at least half of the material I compiled, so believe me, there's plenty left for the FO Super Bowl preview tomorrow. Consider this a nice little preview of the preview.

Giants One of Worst Teams to Reach Super Bowl

Sorry to sound like a broken record about this, but I don't think people understand how weak the Giants are in comparison with past Super Bowl teams... and that includes their postseason run of greatness. One tidbit here that people probably have not heard: Out of the 10 teams that required three wins in order to make the Super Bowl, the Giants have the LOWEST average margin of victory in the playoffs.

Bill Simmons Podcast Championship Preview

Here we are, me and Bill Simmons, previewing this weekend's championship games. We get a little Patriots-centric in here, apologies to those of you from the rest of the country. Also, can you tell from the quality of my voice that I'm fighting off a cold? Man, this has been the sickest year of my life. My stuff starts the podcast, it goes about a half hour, and you can hear it by going to the Sports Guy page and looking in the upper right corner.

ESPN Numbers Crunching: Divisional Round

Here's your heavy helping of Football Outsiders hardcore stats for this weekend's four games. No disrespect is meant to Giants and Cowboys fans because their section is shorter -- I just couldn't find as much compelling Giants/Cowboys material. As for the other three matchups, believe me, there's plenty of stuff still left over for the FO previews. Thanks to Doug Farrar for helping me to put a few of these together.

Bill Simmons Podcast for Divisional Round

Time for another edition of the Bill Simmons podcast on ESPN.com, featuring football talk with all of Bill's friends and... me. I'm like an honorary Friend of Bill Simmons! This week's "mistake I didn't realize until later" is identifying the Green Bay nickel back as Patrick Dendy (last year's guy) instead of Jarrod Bush. Podcast is in the top right of the Sports Guy page (linked) and I think I'm second up this time, not first.

ESPN Numbers Crunching: Wild Card Weekend

Here is this week's stat notebook for ESPN.com, with notes about all four games. This notebook has some interesting stuff about the shotgun formation as well as the asterisk next to Tennessee's "59th in the DVOA era" defense.

Bill Simmons Podcast for Wild Card Weekend

Hey everyone, I did a nice long bit with Bill Simmons today for his podcast, looking at the first round of games. Looks like I'll be doing these each week during the playoffs, so I better think of more jokes. Apologies in advance for slightly messing up some stats -- for example, the Jags no longer qualify as the top offense of the second half because of last week's craptacular third-string-a-thon, and yes, I know some of the quarterbacks I mention in the Todd Collins discussion were late picks, not undrafted. Link goes to Simmons' page on ESPN.com; podcast is in the upper right.

ESPN Numbers Crunching: Week 17

In the final regular-season edition of Numbers Crunching, we look at two ways in which the Giants match up favorably with New England, why the Seahawks lead the league in decorum, and what makes Patrick Willis a very busy man. Plus: A totally ridiculous Rob Bironas-Adam Vinatieri comparison. Seriously, it will blow your mind.

Before the Turner Frenzy Begins, Consider These Cautionary Tales

The final ESPN Monday Night Football feature from Football Outsiders is an adaptation of a piece Bill Barnwell wrote for Boston Sports Media Watch back when the Patriots played the Chargers in Week 2. We know that in the coming off-season, some team will sign Michael Turner to be their starting running back, but do they know what they're getting? If you don't know Turner's DVOA rating for 2007, you are probably in for a bit of a shock.
