Hey everyone, I did a nice long bit with Bill Simmons today for his podcast, looking at the first round of games. Looks like I'll be doing these each week during the playoffs, so I better think of more jokes. Apologies in advance for slightly messing up some stats -- for example, the Jags no longer qualify as the top offense of the second half because of last week's craptacular third-string-a-thon, and yes, I know some of the quarterbacks I mention in the Todd Collins discussion were late picks, not undrafted. Link goes to Simmons' page on ESPN.com; podcast is in the upper right.

So Bill catches up with some of footballs "brightest minds"? Are Bill Bellicheck or Dick Leabeu on his pod cast?
What the hell...Aaron gets credit for Tampa and Washington? I guess it pays to write a book. I'll have to look into that next year.
yikes, Simmons sounds like a 13 year old with a head cold. Dude should take some voice lessons.
Good stuff by Schatz.
Maybe you're kidding about the "more jokes" line. I hope so. Just be yourself, don't force it. We don't need another Dennis Miller situation (he understood the game better than expected, but his scripted stuff was weak).
How could you talk about the Giants and not even mention Brandon Jacobs? The team lives or dies with him on Sunday. There are some reasons for optimism in the passing game (healthier Plax, finally using PA again), but if they win this game, it's because Jacobs is bigger than Tampa's DL.
This is purely kididng, but using Aaron's "Garrard/Romo Hypothesis," that means that cassel and Sorgi are the next big thing in starting QBs....
oops. I spoke too soon. 30 seconds later, BS brought up that very issue.
I still don't get why Aaron hates Cassell so much. How does anyone really know whether Sorgi's better? Sorgi sure didn't look that good against Tennesse.
re: 8 - In Sorgi's defense, he was playing with third string receivers and running backs. I'm not sure how many starting O-linemen were in, but Sunday's game wasn't really a fair opportunity for him to show his stuff.
Okay, listened, it's a decent spot. I'd suggest less humor next week and watch the voice level - it sounds like you're screaming at Bill now and again. But it was a good listen overall.
This thing is 80 minutes long!
Where does Aaron's segment start? No way can I wade through this whiole thing.
Eh, nevermind. It's at the top of the show.
Wild Card Weekend?
Pats aren't playing?
Podcast with Schatz and Simmons?
The Pats commentary percentage over/under is 87%.
13. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how LITTLE there is on the Pats. They stay focused on the WC stuff, mostly. Give it a chance.
Sorgi Vs. Cassell, totally my idea from X long ago on here.
#3 I can't listen to this until I get home, but I agree, Simmons voice is straight through his nasal passage, as if he's playing operator. I've listened to a few in the past, the guests are great (my favorite was the Seth Myers interview, hopefully Aaron tops it.)
Also, to comment on #13, you grossly underestimate him at 87%.
I'm a Boston guy, but his best sports stuff was written prior to the successes in Boston Sports. I'd like to see him adopt another city.
Aaron, you should have went ahead and stolen my Irrational Steve Grogan vs. Jack Trudeau since you guys ran with Sorgi v. Cassell.
;)

Because Cassell is in the process of losing his job to Matt Gutierrez. Sorgi may not be any better, but he seems to be keeping his job.
I don't understand Aaron's hatred of the guy though.
you also need better jokes.
one injury being "fatal".
not particularly funny.
Tough crowd.
What's the over/under on Simmons bashing that is unrelated to this specific podcast? I'm taking the over. Its too bad that people can't appreciate a guy who writes like he's a fan of the game, not a tired old hack.
Re 18
I was a part of the Josh Betts for backup QB movement among Colts fans in the preseason. I don't live in a Colts fan heavy region so I have no Idea how most of the fans felt, but the movement is there. And will be back stronger than ever next season since Betts practice squad eligibility is up after this year (I think).
Did anyone else notice the part where Simmons said "Peter King loves a lot of guys..."?

What else would you expect from a Holy Cross man? ;)
