Mike Tanier's matchup analysis is back in the New York Times each week. Here we go with Week 1, featuring a classic Tanier look at the wonder that is the Washington Redskins front office.

Re: NY Times: Week 1 Matchups
Seahawks over Niners is quite a surprise. It's also interesting how these pieces contain a lot of the gossipy snark that so many of our hyper-factual FO readers like to rail against, but I love it.
Re: NY Times: Week 1 Matchups
A bit surprising in that many picks did not follow the FO "conventional wisdom".
I know it's a bit different picking ATS than straight-up, but I'd still pick the Bears at home over the Lions, and if the Chiefs really are expected to be improved they should get the nod over the Chargers.
Also, not really feeling the Bengals covering against the Patriots, though that line makes it a tougher call.
Re: NY Times: Week 1 Matchups
Agreed. KC seems like the ideal FO pick, considering that the Chiefs are 4.5 point dogs, but have a higher DVOA projection than their opponent and are playing at home.
There’s nothing wrong with going against DVOA, but you’d have to believe that the DVOA projections missed by a combined (25%? 30%?) on KC and SD to pick SD.
It's a similar story (although not quite as big a gap) on picking the Falcons to cover against the Steelers.
Re: NY Times: Week 1 Matchups
"Brandyn Dombrowski will replace McNeill, Legedu Naanee replaces Jackson, and if a few early losses derail the Chargers Super Bowl plans, the general manager A.J. Smith can be found on Palatine Hill with his lute."
Nice.
Re: NY Times: Week 1 Matchups
I'm not sure what's funnier, the reference to fiddling while Rome is burning or the link to the picture.
Great article.
Re: NY Times: Week 1 Matchups
does anyone know what Mike Tanier ATS record is?
Re: NY Times: Week 1 Matchups
It's awful.
Oh, and while I check the FO Premium Picks before these picks, I don't stick with them. I go with them about 62.5% of the time, maybe a little more later in the year.
Re: NY Times: Week 1 Matchups
Here's hoping that Concrete Charlie actually does take the field against the Pack. I'm with Tanier in thinking that's the only way the Eagles win this thing.

Mike T: Unless you've got a new spin on it, leave the Polamalu hair jokes to the hacks. You're better than that. Loved the McNabb piece, by the way.
Re: NY Times: Week 1 Matchups
If a T. S. Eliot reference doesn't constitute a new spin, I don't know what does.

Moss may also just be feeling a Vitamin D deficiency because of lack of limelight: Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco are in town and facing the Patriots’ inexperienced secondary, which could cause a total loony eclipse.
Beautiful. Just beautiful. I love that style of writing, can't get enough of it.
Re: NY Times: Week 1 Matchups
Charlie Whitehurst of the Dolphins just beat me in the AFC Championship 2013...this makes me believe that the Seahawks are destined for greatness beyond our wildest imaginations within 3 years.
Also, the RTT was a particularly gracious gift.

Tremendous.
Re: NY Times: Week 1 Matchups
Forgot to ad;, I need to use "frustum" in a typical everyday conversation now. I have no idea how though. :-)

Tanier,
In picking the Hawks you have exposed the existence of those compromising pics of you squirreled away in Farrar's locked drawer.
